Steering Column Swap?
Will a steering column from a 67 c10 swap into a 65 c10? I couldn't find anything on the search and a buddy wants my old steering column if it works. I figured I would ask here and get the skinny.

Re: Steering Column Swap?
I think most of us trade columns for a tilt instead of stock to stock, that is why you are not getting any info....... Kieth

Re: Steering Column Swap?
It's not a direct bolt-in due the emergency brake bracket on the 60-66 trucks. This bracket does a combination of things, it's secures the E-brake assembly and it also becomes the lower attach mount of the column. You can use a 67-72 column, but you have to weld the column tube nutplates from the 60-66 column into the 67-72 tube. These nutplates are the lower attach points for the column.
I was originally going to use a '68 column in my '64, and I modified the '68 column tube to work, but i wound up finding a '65 automatic column. I have the modified tube in my parts stash. All one would need to do is disassemble the 67-72 column and swap tubes. If you use the later column, you have a few options on the shaft section between the column and the gearbox. One, you can use the '67-'72 section, and it should work. Two, you can get the parts (u-joint, section of 3/4" D-D shaft, gearbox shaft adapter and rag joint) and make your own. Three, you can use a section of your original '65 shaft and buy a combination u-joint that goes from 3/4" D-D to 3/4" -36 spline. |
Re: Steering Column Swap?
I welded the 2 nuts onto the tube and re-used the ebrake cradle/bracket. Going from 65 to 74 the lower section was too short so I used some square tube as a slip and welded it together once mounted.
