Correct Step Bumper 1986 C10 Step Side

1 Attachment(s)
1986, C10 short bed step side truck new to me that I am R/R to be a driver. It has the step bumper, code correct for it is in glove box list of options. However, it is really wide for a step side. Reviewed lots of pics here on the site, for steps sides rear bumpers, not many step sides with step bumper, to know what is correct width. The truck is Canadian built. Is the bumper in the picture the correct width?

Same bumper that is on fleet side trucks, I would bet it was a dealer installed option.

i have a 90 stepper with this stock bumper...
Attachment 1171549

just today on my way home from work i passed a beautiful jet black '78 stepper with a small lift that i have never seen before( i know ALL the nice squares in my town!), & i noticed he had a later bumper like mine mounted on there, & it looked great! tucked in nice on the ends & looked totally factory.
i'm sure he probably had to modify or fab the mounts.

Hi Les,

That looks like a fleetside bumper to me too.

If you look closely at the step/hitch plate you should see a weight rating and GM part number stamped into the metal.

As listed at: http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=36736 the GM part numbers for the painted step bumpers are:

14043837 = stepside
14043838 = fleetside

The chrome step bumper #14043836 isn't listed as stepside or fleetside. But I know from personal experience that it is the wider style that is correct for a fleetside.

yes it is, but i'm not kidding you, it looked factory & blended in real nice. i wish i could have got a pic of it.
in fact, i think it looked way better than any of the old factory bumpers, & it's chrome to boot

To each their own...I absolutely cannot stand it when there is a cross-platform blending of parts.

I have a longbed stepside back half and it has the same bumper as the one pictured above, the correct square-body one that is. Ignore the brake hardware...

EDIT for MY OWN hypocrisy: I should have specified, blending of exterior parts like bumpers. Wheels I am ok with across the IFS trucks, the newest ones look great on all of them. I am gathering parts to put a '99 LQ4, '93 NV-4500, and other misc into my '83 so yeah, I'm a hypocrite...except where aesthetics are concerned. ;) :)

cross platform blending goes on all the time, body's, engines, axles, suspensions, etc.
yes, everyone has there own likes, but 25 yrs ago when the wife had her '79 step, if there was a bumper that looked like the 88-98, i would have swapped it in a second. unless it's a super rare truck that has to be original, and no offense to step bumper stepper owners, they are butt ugly- paint them, chrome them, they still do not flow & match the truck.
a pic is worth a thousand words, wished i'd got one just to show what it looked like, maybe you'd never do it, but you would have to admit it looks factory & makes the old step bumpers look like plow bumpers
not saying he should do it, just throwing the option out there

I checked my bumper part number, it is "14043837 S" . Will have to check the last "3" in daylight to make sure it is not an "8". tongue weight is 400 lbs and load is 4,000 lbs.

Keith do you remember what was installed at the factory.
thanks for all your comments.

Ray,

Will provide some basic measurement of mine to see if we can determine the difference between step side and fleet side bumpers. Thanks for the diagram.

Well, that part number seems to match up with the correct bumper for a stepside so that's a good sign.

You're welcome. After looking at a fleetside bumper and comparing it to the one in your pic, I am going to retract my earlier statement about yours looking like a fleetside bumper. Although I thought it looked a bit wide, I don't think that is the determining factor.

The difference I noticed is at the outer corners. The forward facing edge of your bumper appears to be straight across. A fleetside bumper on the other hand has small notches at each corner that allow for clearance where the lower/rear corners of the bedsides protrude back beyond the rear cross sill.

Re: Correct Step Bumper 1986 C10 Step Side

Ray,

Thanks for your help, now know it is original. The glove box code shows "V43 step bumper". I took it off today, it needs a little straightening before I have it cleaned. Thinking of painting probably rather then power coating, since I plan to use it as a "truck". Painted it will just need touching once in a while. Do you know what color they are?

From pics here of step sides {SS}, not many have step bumper. ????? was the step bumper not very common for SS or have some been changed out?
thanks,
Les

My bad; I missed the point about seeing a GMT400 bumper adapted to a square so I didn't see how it was relevant. I see what you are saying now.
