Sticking in park
2000 Silverado 1500 - Z71 - 5.3 - auto trans - push button 4wd - 122k mi
I did a search but was not able to find the info I need . My gear selector sometimes misses a full engagement into park and the key switch will not turn counter clockwise enough to shut off the engine , with the switch stopping one notch above the off position . It might need 2 or 3 tries before it locks into park and the key can be turned fully to the off position . Sometimes it will also stick coming out of park and will require several tries to get it out of park and the column will clunk when it finally comes out . thanks for your help . |
Re: Sticking in park
I will give a follow up on what I found . There is a detent spring at the base of the shift lever . A piece of that spring is breaking off at it's narrow end on a lot of these trucks .That keeps the lever from locking into it's full park position . I went to Chevy , but they did not sell the spring separate and they want me to buy the whole assembly instead ( $$$ ) . I did later find a reasonably close spring at the hardware store and it was close enough to get the shifter back into good working order .

Re: Sticking in park
Thanks for posting what was found. I have not seen this problem yet, and I maintain a fleet that has about 25 of these classic body Chevys in it.
