Speedometer cable removal

I got a weird noise from the speedo gauge, when driving, I want to lube the cable behind. Is there a clip holding it to the cluster? Anyone got a pic or tell me how to remove it ? Or remove the entire cluster if I got to?

Yes there is a clip holding it in, you have to remove the cluster. You don't have to unhook everything to get it off though.

You don't have to remove the cluster. Reach up under the dash where the cable is going into the cluster and push the clip on the bottom of the housing forward and pull the cable out.
Here's a link how to do it.

You can reach the retainer clip w/out removing the cluster. But if you're going to be wanting to properly lube the cable, removing the cluster is the easiest thing in my opinion.

Push in on the retaining clip and the speedo cable slips off. Then you can remove the actual cable from inside the shielding sleeve and lube it. I always take the cable almost all the way out and then apply grease on it as I insert it back in. Wearing some latex gloves and just using your hands is the best method. Trying to spray something in from a can does not work as effectively.

Yeah you need some voodoo skinny arms or another joint in there somewhere...I always unbolt cluster, tip it forward and use long fingers to unclip it.

Come on now!!
If I can, you can. I'm 63, 6' 4" 290 lbs, blind in one eye and can't see out of the other, built like a neandrathal knuckle dragger. I laid on the floor under the dash, reached up with my right hand and unclipped it. Had the wife pull it out the hole on the firewall. Easy peazy!!
FWIW I'd leave the cluster alone. And don't use any grease on the cable. Use a light oil.

I used white lithium grease as suggested by the dude at Pep Boys. They did not have PJ1 disigned for smother cable operation...Hope the rotating weird noise goes away...

I just put the grease & oil on my arm to slide it under the dash easier...but unfortunately I don't have any more for the cable now.
