Mass Loaded Vinyl locally?
 

Who would be someone that would carry Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) that I could buy from locally? I know the guy on the "sound deadener showdown" website carries it but the shipping kills it because of the weight. What is this stuff used for besides sound deadening? It looks like the stuff they use for a waterproof membrane (shower liner) under the ceramic tile.

You can call around to your local upholstery and audio shops. It's a toss up if they will sell it to you or not. Worth the call to find out though.

Thanks. I was hoping someone would chime in and tell me it was used for something else and that I could buy it at Home Depot for like $1 a foot or something. Oh well..

I would Google the manufacturer and then look for the closest outlet. On another note I spent the $79 to join Amazon Prime, free two day shipping and you would be surprised at what you can find on that site. I did the Google thing when I needed some concrete cleaner and they wanted $30 shipping for a $40 bottle of cleaner and found a local source just up the road. Happy Holidays and good luck.

Yeah, I wish something could be picked up at Home Depot on the cheap. The only thing offered is peel and seal offered by lowes. I just purchased a roll, and while it works, it isn't the best stuff I've seen. It will do the job for behind the gas tank, but I'm going to look elsewhere for a more efficient solution. I'm more real world scientific and less read it on the Internet so it must be true. The sound deadener showdown is a great read and contains a lot of good information. Unfortunately it's biased to a product they are selling and as such doesn't provide a neutral opinion.

MLV is sold at better (local) building supply and insulation companies. You may need to call around a bit. And yes it is bloody heavy, which is what makes it work so well.

Worth the hunt.

Soundproofing. I got mine from a contractor who had a partial roll left over from a project where he was building a conference room for a law firm.

I have 58 sq ft of hushmat coming in for the burb today. It was $239 shipped on amazon. You'd be able to do the ENTIRE cab of your truck, doors and all with that much (in the burb it'll almost cover just the floor). Use that (or a similar product) under a regular floor mat for the same results. I put what dynamat I had here under my carpet in my truck. A knock on the floor is now a solid "thump."

Hushmat is coming in way more expensive than a 100 ft roll of MLV. It's around $1 a sq. Ft. And about 60 bucks to ship.

At the risk of (re)starting a religious war on this forum, MLV and mat perform different tasks and you need both (+ isolating foam) to achieve a quiet cab. Mat stops vibration, MLV stops sound transmission.

Yea!..What he said! Apparently I need to school NC John on sound deadening a vehicle. I already have the hushmat part taken care of John, I need the MLV now and don't want to ship it.

Apparently! I figured you were trying to do the same thing with both.... I've never even heard of MLV before and thought it was a cheaper alternative to the dynamats/hushmats, etc.. etc...

both home depot and lowes sell a roofing material that is made of a sticky tar and comes in rolls. Its pretty cheap. I used it in place of an MLV type material. I'm sure the roofing material is not near as good as a true MLV, but it serves the same purpose since it is a heavier material. I used this roofing material on my cab floor and on my gas tank.

In addition to the roofing material, they also carry some 1' wide rolls of AC duct foam insulation. This is a closed cell foam with a foil backing, sticky on one side.

All in all, I got about $60 bucks in it and it made a huge difference.

I respectfully disagree, That roofing material you used is a cheap substitute for the hushmat vibration damper, not the MLV. Totally different purposes.

I understand why you disagree, maybe i wasnt clear.

The combination of the roofing material and the closed cell foam provides some of the same characterstics of MLV, but as I mentioned is not as good as true MLV.

The roofing material provides both mass to surfaces prone to vibrate, reducing the transmission of road noise, and when applied uniformly creates the type of barrier. Add closed cell foam on top of it to give further noise absorbtion and a thicker barrier, as well as, the foil backing will help with thermal transfer.

The OP was asking for a cheap solution, which I provided.

Sorry if anyone misinterpretted my comments as comparing MLV to home depot materials.

I read about MLV. I thought I was missing something but you guys ARE just using it for sound damping and noise control. Dynamat/hushmat is more expensive for a reason- its way easier and faster to put on. Cut, peel and stick. Done deal.... And as thin as it is I'd think it'd be much easier to put the interior back together. I had a real PITA trying to get my gas pedal back in the truck with all the sound deadening material I put in my truck...

Too each his own but I like this stuff and its worth the extra money to me for as easy as it is to use.

I did what dznucks dicribed on my 69 Fastback Mustang. I had extra roofing material (I think it was called snow and ice from Lowes) and bought the silver insulation. Mine didn't have adhesive backing so I just used spray adhesive. Seemed to work well and I did it for under $100. Is it the best? Hard to know without a good way to test.

There is so much noise you can't do anything to remove I think its easy to go too far. You can quiet down road and engine noise a bunch but with our old trucks you get lots of wind noise anyway. New rubber helps but as old as these trucks are, they're still noisy.
