Why a 305? May as well go 350 in my opinion.

Re: Blew it

I was thinking about going that route too, I wanted to save some gas by going with a 305

Re: Blew it

MPG difference between a 305 and 350 will be negligible in factory form.

Re: Blew it

check craigslist, sometimes there good deals out there, i found myself a 305 complete for $150

What are some of the major changes that I'm going to need to make for this switch?

Re: Blew it

2 Attachment(s)
when i installed mine i installed new motor mounts, and a new flywheel also oil pan gasket,
thats about it, all wiring is almost the same,
u will need new exhaust,
power steering pump is different, mine came with the original pump for the 305 so i didnt
have to buy it,.

besides that thats about it

Re: Blew it

I pulled my factory 84 250 L6 with a 3 speed manual tranny and put in a 74 305 just used the motor mounts and wiring harness out of the 74 ( everyhting plugged in perfectly). the flywheel and bell-house bolted up perfectly from the L6 nothing else needed to be changed just hook up and go.

on a side note my truck had no power options(brakes, steering etc..)or a/c so only had min to hook up.

Re: Blew it

305 is a good motor. Not as powerful as a 350 but a good motor none the less. My truck had one (305) swapped in before I got it and right now im focusing on tightening it up/fixing leaks but in the long run I am building a vortec 350. It's all about what you'll be using it for.

What will you be using your truck for?

Re: Blew it

Your in Texas so hills shouldn't be a problem... 305's HATE hills lol

Re: Blew it

I'm using a stock 79 2B-305 (some carb issues,not block)
runs great otherwise
i've abused a few over the years, depends how they were maintained too

check harness wire length, and wire spot in harness

Re: Blew it

I'm mainly gonna be using it on the weekends. Does anyone recommend a 305 crate? I don't want to spend 2 to 3 thousand on an engine but 1,500 wouldn't be bad. I figure I would be spending that much money fixing up a used engine

Re: Blew it

a 305 or 350 will both be a bump up. both engines will produce better torque bands which you will enjoy. it would be nice to use a 350 vortec but its not as plentiful as the pre 96 model. the vortec 305 isn't much different than the previous models. as for a crate engines, 305's are well priced and the tbi 350's are in the 1200-1500 range. I do suggest a full tune up if you go with a used engine

Have you searched the classifieds here on the board? I recall 2 different sbc's that were listed recently for around 1K.

I'm still doing some searching but haven't had anything to my liking. Craigslist, eBay, classifieds no luck. The search will continue...

I have don this swap many times, I always found a good running donor car and used everything from that. Pulled engine as complete as possible and slid it in.

Re: Blew it

you can have great gas mileage/hp if you go with a ls swap. a 5.3 will be perfect. i screwed up on no going that direction

gramps77 11-21-2013 05:21 PM

why not swap in one of these

Thought about that as well but he has a 6 cylinder in it now, he would have to come up with all the mounting brackets for the front of the engine as well as engine mounts, intake, carb, exhaust and what not. I think to do the V-8 swap you are better off economically with a donor V-8 vehicle. GM crate engine would be the best choice shy of building your own if it was already a V-8 small block.
