HEI with 292

So just curious what's it take to switch over to HEI? What's the pros/cons?

Re: HEI with 292

I just put HEI on my 250. Bought a GM HEI from Tom Langdon. The ole six was running like crap before the swap, huge improvement in idle and drivability. Had to run new power wire to HEI coil (factory coil wire has resistance). Otherwise it was a pretty straight swap. Bumped my timing to about 12* BTDC. I installed new plugs and plug wires too. Only issue I had was with the Champion plugs Tom sold me. Just get AC Delco plugs from the get go.

Re: HEI with 292

Pro: It is a little more reliable.
Con: Cost more to fix if it breaks.

Summary: A good HEI has less tendency to give you problems than the points and will handle wet humid conditions better. (probably not a problem in your area)

I ran a 250 with points and no problems, then put in a 283 with points and only had problems once. I bought a truck with a 292 and HEI and after I rebuilt the HEI I havent had a problem. And this truck may sit more than 3 months without starting it. Jut be sure to have a strong 12 volts to the HEI. Only change to make an HEI work is you have to change the hot wire to 12-14 guage wire.
