Title for a project

If I buy a cab from one guy and a frame from another and neither hand me a title how do I get it registered. I am in CT and they want a VIN verification. I am fine with switching VIN plates, but I wonder if they are gonna go to the frame for a back up like they did with my 73 Camaro?

Ideas? Has anyone been in a similar situation in the past.

I searched and was having trouble finding threads that talked much about this.

Best thing to do is to contact the agency who will do the inspection to find out your particular state's requirements. Swapping a VIN tag is a Federal Offense and could result in some legal implications for you if and when caught.
Each state has its own rules. Some just want the cab VIN, some want the cab and frame VIN.
Each member here has had there own dealings with this problem when it comes to projects, and each state makes their own rules, but the rules have to be followed so you don't get into trouble.

Good luck in getting this situation solved easily!

I know the rules for my state. I am aware of the laws for vin swapping. I know members have done it in the past. I have seen VIN tags for sale. I was hoping someone would chime that has done it and explain how complicated it was. I have no idea how often vin's come up for sale. Should I go look for a clapped out truck with a clean title? etc....

Thanks for your input though.

Just so we are clear I am not looking to do something illegal, but there has to be an easier way than trying to track the PO or buy a donor for the VIN after I do a restoration on a frame and cab.

I don't know if this will help but you can send this woman an email and see if she can help. I met her at a car show a couple months ago.

I think that is like the ME people. Thanks
I do not have the frame and cab yet. I am trying to avoid the issue or prepare myself if I grab some stuff from a member here this weekend.

If you're swapping a cab for a better one, it's preferable to have the VIN that matches the frame and title to swap the new cab on (as in a legal truck you own.) That's perfectly legal in most states because you're replacing a bad part with a good one, the VIN just happens to be attached to it. This has been discussed over and over many times on a mustang forum I'm on because a lot of first gen mustangs have fender apron rot and you have to replace the fender apron with aftermarket metal, it's completely legal to cut off YOUR VIN and weld it back on.

Buying a VIN to put on a vehicle is where it get's illegal. Which is what your situation sounds like, not saying you're trying to do that. Piecing a truck together then buying a VIN and title for it are illegal. I would say your most "legal" option is to buy a decent parts truck with a good frame and VIN/Title and use your good cab on that.

Get a bill of sale for the cab with the vin# and a bill of sale for the frame with the #, in most states you simply take the bills of sale to the dmv with the assembled parts. And once they verify everything is not stolen theyll assign a new vin#. It wouldnt hurt to check with your local dmv and ask them.

Cool. I will try that. Thanks
