Tail light Ideas
Guys and Gals,
I am trying to get an idea what tail lights would look good on the back of my 67 stepside. Post your ideas and any pics you might have. Thanks, Wootdog |
I am looking at a rear roll pan with some nice thin LED tails on my 67 Stepside  :D
Here are some examples of Stepside rear ends I took at Carlisle this past June: Carlisle 2003 All Truck Nats |

Nuthin beats the OE setup IMO. Every other idea I've seen just looks out of place.

I like the 60-66 Chevy fleetside pick-up tail lights myself. They are small and clean looking with the trim ring :-)
|
I think it would look cool if you frenched them into the rear fenders. I saw this on a 69 at the car show this weekend. Sweet look!

These are supposed to be off a 40's f*rd pick-up.

I do like that yellow one there.
As much as I like the stock lines and stuff, the tail lights are a bit big and funky on the step sides. |
Here's mine. Early '50's Chevy trucks and Early F*rds.

This is not my truck, but this is what I plan on doing for lights on my step...I really like the look of the El Camino/Malibu rear bumper on our trucks.
|
I've seen that with the older Elcy bumper...the round tail lights in the same shape bumper as that one. It had been shortened a bit and rechromed.
It looked sweet. |
I have some of the orginal ones that are stainless steel they look good.

Mine has 65 Impala lights mounted sideways. These were on the truck when I bought it but I like them. They get lots of nice comments at gas stations. :D

Does anyone have pics of 60-66 fleetside lamps on step fenders???
I was very interested in that.....or even those tail lamps off of a 70 or so VW bus....they look cool.... |
Look at Harley aftermarket. There are some nice LED bullet lights that would probably look nice.
Here are the ones I bought for my Sporty. http://www.signaldynamics.com/images...ights/2401.jpg |
The lights on my '68 are setup about the same way rlg_67 said. They look like the stock size taillights, but the previous owner cut out a place in the center of the rear fender for them. There are actually three tabs left on the fender that the lights screw into. The lights stick out maybe 1/4"-3/8". I have no reverse lights though. Looks pretty cool, plus I don't like the look of the stock ones.
I had a really cool idea for lights though. The aftermarket tailgates with the embossed bowtie would look kicka$$ with LEDs around the bowtie. The only problem would be how to mount them. I thought the long thin strip tail lights would work, but the lights would really need to be flush to look good. Haven't really worked out all the flaws, but I love the idea. |
Jwill41 has the right idea
I saw a stepside with an un-cut El Camino bumper on the back and immediately wanted one, but I sectioned it to wrap around the box, just like Jwill41. Looks smooth and finished, not like the afterthought, functional stock lights. Good luck, Scott

ok - i apologize for the crappy photo, but my scanner has just about crapped out.
when i bought the truck, it had taillights below the bed like this: http://expert.ics.purdue.edu/~leonar...%20640x480.jpg but i added aftermarket things: BTW, THESE AFTERMARKET TAILLIGHTS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION AND ARE FOR SALE IF YOU WANT THEM! (i can give you better pics if you need) http://expert.ics.purdue.edu/~leonar...20-%20dark.JPG and then, i found a pair of rusty old originals: (I personally prefer original) http://expert.ics.purdue.edu/~leonar...%20640x480.JPG good luck! let us know what you decide! ;) jewels. |
I was thinking of doing the same thing as bobs409, but with a set of 70-73 Camaro taillights I picked up for $20. I was thinking of putting them in a rollpan, but 5 1/2" diameter lights probably won't fit in there.

NSANE Where did you get those?
