Wiring thru firewall

My main wiring harness that passes thru the firewall by the fuse panel always comes loose. Every time I open the hood it has popped out and I can see into my cab. It drives me crazy. How do I get the thru wall grommet to stay together/ in place?

Is the rubber hard? Maybe a new rubber grommet would work.

I have been considering using something like this in the future:

Mine was doing the same thing. Yes, the rubber on mine is hard also. I smeared some black silicone in the groove and shoved it in the hole making sure the entire groove slipped into the firewall hole. Let it sit overnight and no longer popping out.

the trick is to put them in the microwave and to get them warmed up enough to be pliable. little Vaseline or white grease and put it together just like new. don't stop to pick your nose or scratch your ass once you get it worm enough. maybe 30 seconds at a time until it is just right
if you have torn the crap out of it taking it out, i would suggest looking for a better one

The rubber is in the firewall just fine, it's the plastic plug that won't stay in the rubber.
Black silicone will probably work, but don't want something that I can't get apart in the event I need to

I know you can boil rubber in Wintergreen Oil. It should help return old hard rubber back to being flexible and remain that way even after cooling off. Used to use this trick on carb boots for 70's model Honda cb750s. You could also take the grommet out of the firewall and check to see if the plug will stay in. If it won't stay in it probably needs replaced. Probably the easiest and cheapest is to replace I think they're only $5 new or $20 for the set.

I've got quite a few Weatherpack components scattered through my '63.
They make a large assortment of weatherproof harness plugs and accessories.
They go together easily and are permanent replacements for factory (non-OE)
components.
These are comparable to aviation plugs....very high quality.....and not that expensive.
