Dash heater box removal
 

What's the easiest way to remove the under-dash heater box on a 72 gmc. I've got a bunch of leaves and mouse poop in mine and it needs cleaned out BAD!

I just removed mine in a 72' jimmy for the same reasons. Whatever was living in there chewed the fan also! The easiest way that I've found is to remove the inner fender on the passenger side first. This will allow you the best access to all the bolts on the engine side of the heater. Some of the bolts go thru both the outside box and the inside box. Be careful not to mess up any of the gaskets unless you plan on replacing them. I then took all the parts and soaked them in a tub of soapy water and scrubbed them clean to get all the mouse stuff off. This would be the perfect time to replace the heater core and the fan motor. I also put some screens on the vents in the cowl to keep out the big leaves and debris. Hope this helps.

I suggest removing the inner fender. It is very easy. I also remove my hood but I was doing a lot more than just the heater core but it was definately nice. I also loosened the top bolts on the fender to pull it away from the truck to install with the new gasket in place. The hardest part of the operation was reinstalling with the new rubber boot on the new heater box and keeping it on while fitting everything up.

I'm not talking about the one in the engine compartment. I've already cleaned that out, replaced the core, etc. etc. I'm referring to the one underneath the dashboard that the windshield defrost ducts are connected to.

There are a few nuts in the engine compartment that you will need to remove in order to get the heater box on the inside out. There are also some on the inside of the cab to remove. Drop it down and remove the heater control cables. It then should come out.

I had to take my glovebox out to get to the screw on the top.
