Texas license year of man. ?
1 Attachment(s)
I want to register my '68 chevy with original 1968 made license plates. Will the Texas DMV let me use plates that say "TRUCK" on them or are those for 18 wheelers?

Re: Texas license year of man. ?
You can use truck plates.

Thanks Mike!

Re: Texas license year of man. ?
They have to be "Truck" plates and NOT "Farm Truck"
Funny story. I just received a bill from Austin's toll road authority for toll violations. The plate number is the same as my YOM plate on my '72 Corvette. It hasn't been out of the garage in 4 years. EDIT: I'm pretty sure the law was changed a couple years ago. YOM plates are only available on vehicles registered as "antiques" |
Re: Texas license year of man. ?
You can use year of manufacture on "antique" and "classic" vehicles. Classic vehicles can be driven and used like regular vehicles.

Re: Texas license year of man. ?
As said before - you must use TRUCK plates.......not FARM TRUCK or passenger car plates. The plates must be year correct and in good condition. The DVM will inspect them so bring them with you.
I've had two trucks registered as antiques using YOM plates. Less than a year ago we registered my son's truck as a classic using YOM plates with no issues. Go here for all the information you thought you would ever want to know: http://txdmv.gov/forms Good luck! On edit - Very nice truck! |
Re: Texas license year of man. ?
Registering under antique means no yearly inspection!!!

Re: Texas license year of man. ?
Looks like they fixed the YOM plate for "classics".

Re: Texas license year of man. ?
I just registered my 72 as an antique yesterday with yom truck plates. I was sorry to hear that they will no longer allow farm truck plates. Makes the $75 i spent on the never issued 55 yom plates 10 yrs ago a big waste!

Mine are car plates. I had no issues getting them registered.

Re: Texas license year of man. ?
FYI, you will have to take your plates in to the DMV for them to approve them. I just registered mine with YOM plates a couple of weeks ago in Kaufman Co.

Re: Texas license year of man. ?
I took mine into my local tax office, which was in late 2012. Perhaps the process has changed?

Texas Transportation Code:
Sec. 504.501. CLASSIC MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAVEL TRAILERS; CUSTOM VEHICLES; STREET RODS. (a) The department shall issue specialty license plates for a motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old or is a custom vehicle or street rod. The license plates must include the word or words "Classic," "Custom Vehicle," or "Street Rod," or a similar designation, as appropriate. (b) A person eligible for the license plates may instead use license plates that were issued by this state in the same year as the model year of the vehicle and are approved by the department. The department may require the attachment of a registration insignia to the license plate in a manner that does not affect the display of information originally on the license plate. Sec. 504.502. CERTAIN EXHIBITION VEHICLES; OFFENSE. (a) The department shall issue specialty license plates for a passenger car, truck, motorcycle, or former military vehicle that: (1) is at least 25 years old, if the vehicle is a passenger car, truck, or motorcycle; (2) is a collector's item; (3) is used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest and is not used for regular transportation; and (4) does not carry advertising. (b) The license plates must include the words "Antique Auto," "Antique Truck," "Antique Motorcycle," or "Military Vehicle," as appropriate. (c) A person eligible for the license plates may instead use license plates issued by this state in the same year as the model year of the vehicle and approved by the department, provided that a passenger car must bear passenger car or truck license plates and a truck must bear passenger car or truck license plates. The department may require attachment of a registration insignia to the license plate in a manner that does not affect the display of information originally on the license plate. |

I got my 1968 Texas truck plates registered through the "tax office" as well. They will want to see the plate so bring them with you along with the form. Took about 20 minutes for mine to be done.

Re: Texas license year of man. ?
Thanks for all the replies. I have a set of NOS 68 truck plates on the way I scored on fleabay.

Re: Texas license year of man. ?
If I had a '68, I'd try to get the car plates that say "HEMISFAIR" on the bottom (commemorating the World's Fair in San Antonio).
Either way, I like the '68 white on black plates. |
