A question for the heater experts.......
 

Hey guys! I know I don't belong here with a heater out of my 46 but its kind of slow over on the pre- 47 side of this forum. I was wondering if any of you guys know if this heater can run off of 12 volts or retro fitted to go 12 volts with a different fan motor. There are no markings on this thing that I can find. Thanx guys!

You should be able to get a motor and convert it to 12v.

Motor looks the same as the one in my 55. I don't have a part number to help you out though

Most likely you can find a 12V motor that will replace that one but it may take some hunting.

The other option as Daze57 suggested would be a voltage reducer that is a resistor with 12V going in and close to 6V going out. They get pretty hot so you would want it mounted where it wouldn't come in contact with anything and especially your fingers if you reach down under the dash. Those units are usually controlled by a Rheostat switch that drops the output voltage some, especially if you have just barely on.

Google "Thomas school bus heater motors" or "Bergstrom heater motors" if you want a 12V replacement. Motors are spec'ed by shaft diameter, direction of rotation, case length, and number of internal speeds.

Today's modern electronics could take 12V in and provide a pulsing 12V out that doesn't overheat the 6V motor and provides nearly infinitely variable speeds. The advantage to this method is it doesn't require a resistor or other power wasting device. Look around for "12V DC motor controllers" and you might find something.
