Re: WTB Underdash AC

64 did not use a Cool Pack - 64 was the first year of in-dash A/C so all the dealer installed otherwise were Frigiking etc units. 63 was the last year for the cool-pack.

Additionally, there are a ton of parts related to a cool-pack including a special truck-specific heater wiring harness, special blower motor w/ A/C mount under the dash, a particle-board material chute to conduct air from the blower, two non-existent firewall support rods to support the unit, etc....its a real pain in the a__ to put one of these together - you are far and away better off finding correct factory A/C off a 64-66 truck in my opinion....however if you are bent on doing this, feel free to ask questions - I have three or four of these units (not for sale) and know a decent amount about them....glad to help info-wise if I can....

Great info. I am trying to help my friend restore this truck as period correct as possible. What other AC units would work and do you know where to get them? He does not want the newer reproduction Plastic chrome copies. Also he is looking for period correct accessories like a compass or clock or whatever. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Well, the period correct Frigiking and other off-brands they made back then are not too good and expensive as hell to replate and restore, and are always in crappy condition it seems. They also use chromed plastic so he's better off doing in-dash factory A/C (commonly sold on this board or Ebay) or doing modern hurricane etc A/C. As for the Compass, get ready - runs 850.00 to 1100.00 for one on Ebay - not worth it in my opinion since every man woman and child is going to know instantly where he got it when they see it mounted in the truck - there are no trucks out there that really came with one so the only ones installed these days are the ones someone paid a war pension for on Ebay. A factory clock is usually 500.00 up too. He can get a reproduction factory tach from LMC truck and that is only about 200.00 and is 100% correct and cool and functionable. Ebay is his ticket to all these options aside from people on this board....hope this helps but PM for my number and I can talk to him and help with some insight and info about rare accessories

Wow, GMC nut has been a big source of information. I am trying to get my friend off his butt to join the truck site. We have built 1967-1972 trucks since High School in the late 70s. We had never really done 60 -66 trucks. We have parted a few but not restored them. Chris was wanting this Short wide 64 truck for over 22 years. It burned under the hood but was a fairly clean truck. The body and drive train are in very good condition. He has rebuilt and reused almost all original parts. The undercarriage is powder coated and even the seat springs are perfect and repainted. It will be a beautiful truck. Again thank you for the help . We may need to ask for assistance in the future.
