Tips for filler neck gasket replacement?

Hey all ,

I have a stock '72 Chevy C10. I am trying to replace the exterior gasket on the fuel filler neck -- without taking out the filler neck itself. I looked in the service manual for instructions, for 'how to' videos on YouTube, and threads here in the forum, and haven't found anything that helps.

Any one know the best way to do this, or can point me to a website or video that shows how to do it?

Let me know -- thanks!

I don't know about it being the best are not but I can tell U how I did it and it was pretty easy.

Take the gas tank bolts loose so U have some play up at the neck and coat the neck with dish washing liquid to help it go in place. Warm the gasket up also in some warm water before U start.

I cant find the thread right now, but I remember reading how alot of people use dish soap on the gasket it to help slide it in place.

I ordered one from Wes (read alot of bad reviews about the more common gaskets cracking after 6 months or so), but waiting to do my body work and paint before installing it.

I used the dish soap and warm water trick without loosening the tank. Just pushed it in place.

Thanks all -- I'll give this a try!

One quick q for KSShane -- I'm intrigued by your comment about 'common gaskets'. I just ordered one on line -- who is this "Wes" that you referred to?

Soap on the gasket wasn't enough for me. It was way too tight on one side. I took a thick shovel handle, put it about 8" down the open fuel neck, then leaned on the handle gently to create a gap while I got it in place.

Have a wide flat head screw driver handy to push the edges down in to place
