Shift Indicator

Is there a way to fix the shift indicator? Mine starts moving from park after I hit Drive so it reads Reverse. The wife has trouble not knowing which gear she is in.

1985 Auto with 3 speeds and overdrive
Tilt Wheel and Cruise Control (doesn't work)

Re: Shift Indicator

If it's still there, slide the rubber...thing/o-ring/donut jobbie up that is on the column at the edge of the dash bezel, pull the 4 screws out of the lower column cover, shift into 1 and you should see a clip with a fine cable attached to it. Loosen and pull down until needles points to 1. Cycle a few times, adjust as necessary.

Ignoring that this is not for an OD, this is what the assembly looks like.

Whoa. Very nice.

The only thing I would add is that the assembly plant did this operation in Neutral (N). It takes any error and spreads it across the range rather than focusing it at one end.

Every time I put one of these back together, it works twice and them becomes unclipped. What am I doing wrong?

:) Thank you Keith, I was not sure if the clippy was accessible from just N, or if it was still up under the main bezel. I drive an SM-465 truck regularly. My TH400 truck was parked...in 2001, I couldn't remember how far you had to go to get to it.

Crimp the clip tighter.
