Painting Rally Wheels
 

I want to repainted a set of Factory 72 Rally Wheels I got last weekend, what do you guys use to replicate the factory look ? Thanks....:metal:

im just going to have mine powdercoated, but they do sell rally wheel silver in rattle cans also. Eastwood sells it and maybe VHT also

I'm not sure if rally wheels are any different from a paint standpoint, than steelies, but I wire cupped then primed them with Rustoleum spray primer and then multiple coats of Rustoleum gloss white spray paint. It's been about a year now, and they look just as good as they did when I painted them. I guess powdercoat might last longer, but this route worked for me

Your local parts store will carry silver rally wheel paint.

just scuff and/or sand... prime, and paint. I need to do the same

I used a paint color called 'Argent Silver', rattle can. Easy to touch-up that way.

The guy I got them from told me they came on a 72 Blazer from new ? the Argent Silver is correct I think. Thanks guy's

I've done the Rustoleum thing too and the look is pretty good. Just don't do it if you drive gravel roads. Mine have picked up lots of chips from that. Powder coating is probably much more durable.

If you want them to last over the long haul powdercoating is well worth it and maintenance free.

Powdercoat will be the most durable route. If you're a "do it once, do it right" kind of guy, you won't ever have to mess with them again.

Not trying to highjack this thread, but I'm in the middle of powder coating VS painting. I'm running rally's from a'76 on my '71 and they are in need of refinishing. A local powder coating company will clean, blast, powder coat and everything in between for $65.00 a wheel. I drop them off, and pick them up when they're done. I have no personal experience with powder coating, so I don't know if the price is good deal or not. I don't know how powder coating is compared to paint. The picture TX Firefighter posted looks great. I have contacted a local body shop that will paint them, but I have not got an estimate yet.

powdercoating is very durable and at 50-75 per wheel pricy for a limited budget


but for an everyday driver a quart of rustoleum is 10 dollars good enough to keep them the same color with touchups to look good for many many years as you use the vehicle

really up to you 300 for the powdercoat or 10 for the old fahioned paint and touchups// the fact is very few will really notice on a daily driver

My trim rings gouged the crap out of my powder coated wheels, that's why I went with paint.

For rallys; use Krylon Dull Aluminum and Rustoleum Clear.

For the white wheels, use Rustoleum Gloss white. It's beautiful paint, easy to use and it looks great.

Just sand them down and shoot 'em. A $4 can of paint will make your wheels look brand new.

Thanks for all your advise ! Yes they are real Rally's, not stock steel wheels, I think I will go with paint after hearing about the trim rings wrecking the power coat finish. Also am doing a frame up rebuild and the extra cash saved will go towards other needed replacement items. The Kyrlon/ Clear coat idea sounds ok for now.

The Krylon Dull Aluminum is a special order color. Most places don't stock it. I get mine at Ace Hardware. I have some rally wheels that I painted 10 years ago that still look nice.

Had mine sand blasted for $75 with the intent to rattle can them myself silver...They offered to powder coat them for an additional $20...An offer I couldnt refuse! I got all four wheels sandblasted & powder coated for less than $100... https://scontent-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/...95_n.jpg?lvh=1

Powder coat is great,been doing it for years. But nothing is indestructible in time. I also paint to save money. The beauty of steel wheels is the fact you can keep refinishing them over and over fairly easily...and cheaply. Most of my steel wheels are over 40 years old and some you can't tell them from new once prepped and coated with whatever

I've done a couple sets of Rally Wheels. Both started out as reclamation projects, but after sandblasting, a couple coats of paint and clear they look pretty good.
