brake fluid
Gents,
i went out to check my oil after i got home from work, and i found brake fluid all over the Master cylinder and fender well, firewall, would this happen if you where brakeing hard?? and could fluid be coming from the cap gasket?? |
Re: brake fluid
Possibly the rubber seal on the cap is leaking. The rubber breaks down over the years from the brake fluid and it will leak all over the place, as you have discovered. And brake fluid is an excellent paint remover.

Re: brake fluid
Possibly and Yes.
When I bought my truck the first thing I noticed was brake fluid everywhere like you mention. I pulled the cap off and there was corrosion on the top edge of the MC and on the cap under the gasket. I carefully scraped the the edge of the MC with a fresh razor and some scotch brite making sure not to get any particulate into the reservoir and the cleaned the cap of rust as well. The gasket wasn't bad so I just cleaned everything up and then flushed the entire system out through each bleeder at the wheels. I'm not sure what caused the rust there, condensation maybe. My booster had been replaced in the last 6 months shown on a receipt with the truck. To me it seemed like the cap had a better fit one direction than the other so I made sure and put it on that way. Not sure if there is a forward/backwards for the lid, could've been wrong from the previous repair. Haven't had any issue since, 8 months with maybe 3k miles of hauling stuff. Hope this helps. Oh yeah, brake fluid does eat paint in a hurry so make sure and clean it off quick. |
Re: brake fluid
yes i noticed my nice rustoleum paint job bubbling up on my fender wells, sprayed it good with some brake cleaner and will repaint this weekend.

Re: brake fluid
I have the exact same problem. Does anyone know if you can just by a new gasket or do you have to buy an entire MC?

Re: brake fluid
I have seen the "gasket" or "seal" offered at Oreilly and Autozone. It may also be on eBay. The chrome covers on eBay are like $10.
