71 C10 SWB Project Built
Well, I just picked this 71' C10 SWB 2WD up back in March and it had a couple of little problems. Nothing big at all. And as I started to mess with them, I got this bright idea to tear it all down and build my dream truck! I would appreciate any input that you might have. This will be my first complete build so, it should be fun and I'll keep you up to date as I go. This is what I started out with...

Stacked the bed and cab together and wheeled it out of the way...It actually worked out pretty good.

Re: 71 C10 SWB Project Built
Well, I plan on a 4/6 drop. Sleeper look. Not 100% on what color I will go with. I was thinking gun metal gray/charcoal gray. And not sure on what power plant to do. I was thinking a 383 with a single turbo or a 496 BBC. Still up in the air though

Re: 71 C10 SWB Project Built
I know where a nice 468 BB is up in your neck of the woods for a good price. Its another board members that I had planned on picking up myself but due to some personal issues I wasnt able to.

Re: 71 C10 SWB Project Built
Here are some problems that I ran into...
The previous owner torched 2/3 of the trans cross member to make room for the exhaust on the passenger side. http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/s...b00/C1017.jpeg This is the driver side upper control arm. When the previous owner rebuilt the front end, he over tightened the cap nut and with all the travel, it shaved the flare down about 1/16th of an inch. http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/s...rb00/C1023.jpg http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/s...rb00/C1022.jpg Not really a problem but, he also welded 1/4 inch steel to the frame for added support I guess. http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/s...rb00/C1018.jpg And finally, THE CANCER! This is the only spot on the frame thank god. http://i559.photobucket.com/albums/s...rb00/C1019.jpg |

Re: 71 C10 SWB Project Built
Squared up, leveled and straight. Now time to tear back down and get it all ready for POR 15 and undercoating.

Re: 71 C10 SWB Project Built
This is Awesome Bud! Ill be Watchin this one! And i think that 1/4 welded steel on the frame is the remnace of a steel step bumper possibly a dealler install. on a 69' cst i had a while back the brackets on the step bumper were 1/4 inch and welded to the frame.

Very nice build. Good work on the frame. Looking forward to following along. That is a nice work space you have.

Re: 71 C10 SWB Project Built
Thanks everyone. Ya, I built it last summer. 28x36x9'6". Should of went bigger. haha. Ill be posting more pics as I go along. Today I am mounting the rear shock cross member and making sure it all lines up before I fix the rust spot on the frame.

Re: 71 C10 SWB Project Built
I picked up a set of upper control arms from Todd68chevy yesterday. They came off of his 68. I already have a front end rebuild kit so I'll just swap it all out. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, I will have a rolling chassis again.

Re: 71 C10 SWB Project Built
Painted the frame using SEM Rust Shield with a gloss enhancer/hardener. I think it turned out nice.

Re: 71 C10 SWB Project Built
One thing different I did, on the upper control arm ball joints...I flipped the bolts around so the lock washer and nut was on top. I didn't like it the other way because the nuts were too close to the rubber boot. Still have to purchase ECE HD trailing arms and suspension. Going to start rebuilding the 12 bolt rear end soon. Keep you all updates as I go...
