Vin Number confusion

Hi all
I have a 55 truck 3200 with a weird vin number.
Starts off with what looks like a 7 digit phone number and ends with
F255X.
I have seen other threads which refer to this last F255X number.
What I would like too know is what does this mean.
The only reasoning I have is at some time the truck has lost or not had a correct
vin number.
There is no other numbers on the truck.
Thanks for any input.

Re: Vin Number confusion

The original vin will be stamped on top the upper frame rail just in front of the steering box and under the driver side cab. It should match the tag on the driver door jamb if the cab has not been changed. Update, doing some web research not all 55.2 had the jamb tags. The F255X seems to show up a lot when trucks have been retitled. One thing I am wondering is if MAYBE the F and X are codes for government, etc. vehicles.

F = Flint Michigan plant where it was made
2 = Second series
55 = Year of manufacture
X = Manual transmission

This should also be part of the engine number on the block.

Well I suppose I'm the one who is going to have to ask is the a first or second. 55 was a split year so a lot changed that year.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think a 3200 was until 55 second series Task Force trucks. But the vin says its a second series AD series was 31, 36, 38 and no 32

I have a similar issue with my 53' Chevy. I bought the truck from a friend in Calif. I'm from La. The 1st three characters of the VIN (on the title) is DMV. 5 numbers are next followed at the end with CA. Doesn't look like any VIN I've ever seen. Can anyone shed light on this one as well? Pete

Re: Vin Number confusion

That sounds like an assigned number from the DMV in CA. The owner may have lost the paperwork or who knows what.

He says the F255X follows seven digits, I thought the code was always first then the production sequence number???
