Since I am starting this build off might as well take pictures of everything, plus I just enjoy taking pictures. There are only a few places that I can see "bad" rust (everything else seems minimal surface rust) illustrated by blue. Also the drivers door I can not get to shut quite right, it will not latch in and stay latched well. I am not certain but the gas gauge I think is not working, if not then I got lucky and the guy I bought it from had a full tank (he had said he had been driving it around). It drives fine I puttered around town in it today the speedometer makes a noise, but I read what that problem is. I am not certain about the temperature gauge there seems to be no needle or anything does it just light up when it is hot? That being said after driving it around town I got the laser thermometer on it and the hottest spot on the engine I could find was 265 (good or bad)? I am also attaching a picture of my first rebuild not a Chevy, not a truck, but I miss her :(

Good looking start, the door issue could be one of two things, worn hinge pins, you can buy thru your local autoparts store and or worn /sticky latch remove clean and readjust, the worn hinges will show up as movement up/down when the door is almost closed, see if it will move, the temp light either it will be green or red normal or getting hot, so called idiot lights, to check engine run temp with a infrared gun, point to top of radiator and or thermostat housing to get a more accurate reading, you have rust in the usual places, they sell patch kits to repair. Speedometer can have several issues, first pull cable from both ends and remove from truck, use liquid wrench or wd-40 and squirt it good and hang in garage for a couple of days, reinstall and see how it works, if stll making noise lube head where coupler threads onto speedometer head with a very lite coat of vaseline and reinstall .

Hey Brokestudent, Congrats on the truck and welcome aboard!
I've got rust in the front fenders. Also, check the bottom front corner of the doors, sometimes it gets in there too. Looks like some patch panels are in order, but nothing you can't handle with the pros we've got here!
The detail in the pictures combined with a slightly tight focus makes it look like you're taking pictures of a model truck in a winter diorama, it's cool!

Hi and welcome the rust on the right fender looks like some repairs have been done there before that rust out goes all the way to the bottom of the fender ....the drivers door is likely the latch mine did the same thing years ago i pulled it out and brazed the worn area and it works great now

That looks like a pretty decent truck

Looks like minimal rust so far. Have you looked under the cab yet?

Without knowing whether you have lights or gauges, I don't know what to say about that. Except that if your 265 degrees wasn't on the exhaust manifold, I would say you have a cooling problem, and I wouldn't drive it anymore until you get that figured out.

I think I was catching heat from the exhaust manifold, and while the laser was not right on it there was certainly a close proximity. The rest of the motor ran cool i.e. the hottest spot I do not think even broke 200 mark.

You need to pull up the floor mat and the door sill plates and get a look at the sheetmetal under there. usually if the fender rot is that bad then you'll also have some rust/rot at the base of the kick panels and the rockers. but almost all the trucks have some rust down there.

Anyway its a totally sweet truck man! I love it. I like the painted bumpers and grill. I'd go for some different, earlier style dog dish hub caps though. Or run without them. Maybe painting them white would make them match better?

Enjoy driving it!

On the speedo issue: Rich told you right, also: mine had cable housing somewhat pinched where bracket in cab held it down. I simply moved cable and housing forward a bit to get the pressure off, it now works great.
There's a few Okies that get together with our trucks in Sapulpa/Sand Springs for burgers when it's warm...stay in touch and bring your truck!

I thought there was too shallow of a depth of field on a few of those shots for an iphone
