1968 Short box
So I picked up a 1968 2wd coil spring shortbox and I was hoping to get some help/information since this is my first project truck. The truck has a 5x5 bolt pattern and front wheel disk brakes. I realize these don't come stock with a 5 bolt pattern or disk brakes. The old owner is not available for comment so I was wondering if there is a way to determine what rear end is in the truck. I know commonly the 1971-2 chevy rear end can bolt in to swap from 6 lug to 5 lug. What I really want to know is what drum brake rebuild kit I can buy for the rear brakes and if there are some serial numbers I can use to figure out what is in my truck? I would appreciate any advice or experience shared. Thank you

Re: 1968 Short box
Welcome to the board , you'll find a lot of very helpful people on it. If the rear end doesn't look like it's been welded on (the saddles where the u-bolts sit are original) and it has a track bar mount cast into the housing , it should be a 71-72 rear end. If the brakes are 11x2" , I would guess it to be all 71-72 stuff , easy to get at any good parts place. Good luck with your project , somebody's got to ask for pics of it soon... - Bob

Re: 1968 Short box
I put 5 lug 72 axles in my 70. I bought parts at o'reillys for a 72 and it worked perfectly.

Read through this thread and see if it helps. Post #8 shows where the code letters should be if it has them. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=578793 LockDoc |
