Factory fuel tank differences?

Hey all,
I'm ordering a new tank for my C10. It's a '69 cab and frame that I've put a '68 clip on. I found a tank on eBay at a good price, but the companies fitment guide says it will not work, that it will only work on 70-72 models. The reason given was this particular tank was for emissions-equipped trucks. I though all 67-72 tanks were the same, only the sending units were different. Am I wrong? The tank they have for 67-69's is about $40 higher. I don't want to spend $40 that I could put on other parts!

Hey Smitty,

I'm with you on the vent lines, but they are incorporated into the sending unit that's installed into the tank. That's why I'm confused about the fitment guide distinguishing between the 67-69 and 70-72 trucks. I though ANY 67-72 tank would work and you just install the appropriate sending unit depending on whether or not you have emissions.

I have very limited knowledge as to how the EEC system is set up, but I do believe the tanks are different with EEC. Look at Rock Auto's website. They show both available starting with the 1970 model year, but only without EEC in 1969. I believe, at a minimum, the tank necks are different. They have 2 different brands listed. I read on a previous thread that folks had good luck with the Spectra Premium tanks. I think their prices are good and shipping to Alabama is probably about $25.

As far as fitment I think the tanks are the same. The sending units are different as well as the gas cap (one vented, one not). If I remember correctly there is a nipple on the passengers side of the tank for a vent line that goes up inside of the rear cab corner. All you would have to do is cap the nipple off.

Thanks! I'll check out those Spectra tanks.

Thanks LockDoc. So, if I bought the cheaper EEC style tank then all I would need to do is put the 67-69 style sending unit in it and cap/plug the EEC tube?

Yup, and use a vented cap on it.

Thanks! The difference in the cost of tanks will pay for the sending unit! This hobby is just too darn expensive too throw money away!
