Original Tranny Question
72 C10
Did it come with a (don't know the correct term) long or short rear housing piece on the transmission? Thanks |
short tail(6" on the 350t equipped, & 4" tail on the 400 T equipped) crazyL

Confused here.
Isn't 4" shorter than 6? My wife seems to think so, but we won't go there.;) "short tail(6" on the 350t equipped, & 4" tail on the 400 T equipped)" The original (I thought) tranny and engine has been out of the truck for quite awhile. It has a short tail on it it. A friend stopped by tonight and said the original trannys had the long tail on them. Just trying to figure out if the tranny I have is original, before I have it rebuilt. Thanks |

The tail housings on a TH350, and a TH400 are not interchangable, so not really relevant. By 72 GM had dropped the long tail housing in favor of the short for all applications. You may see long tails on older trucks, and especially with Powerglides, but my money is on a short tail in your's......Hotrod 70C10... you have a smart woman!! A lot of women have trouble judging distance because most of their life thay have been told 4" is 6!!

I am pretty sure the long shaft trannys were for later vehicles.
Example, the TH350 was a new tranny for the 67 - 72 trucks, yet they were all short shaft. |
TH350s were made with 6,9, and 12 inch tailhousings.
All the trucks I've ever had came stockwith a 6 inch version. The 9 incher is the one that is the same as 700r4 in overall length, so they are sought after to replace crapped out 700s by cheap folks. 12 incher was used is some vans and stationwagons. If you run a 9 inch version TH350 on a 67-72 shortbed, you can get a used driveshaft that is already the right length and do away with the old 2 piece unit from 1. a 67-72 short bed 3 speed 6 cyl truck 2. an early 80s model short bed 700r4 truck I put my small block on correct small block mounts and used a 9 inch 350. I was able to use the stock 6 cyl 3 spd one piece driveshaft. Later, I replaced the TH350 with a 700r4 and reused the same shaft. My trans guy charges the same to build me a TH350, no matter what length, so I used the 9 and saved money on having a driveshaft built. I'm cheap, and my truck originally was a 6 cyl 3 spd so I had the shaft laying around. |
