Steering column help-desperate!

1 Attachment(s)
I'm replacing the turn signal switch and wiper switch on my '88 V30. I can't figure out how to get the shroud off the column from this point to access the wiper switch. Can anyone help? I'm afraid if I don't finish this quickly l ll forget how it goes back together.

Thanks!

The shroud is loose but it won't slide off. It feels like something inside the hole where the lock cylinder is is holding it up but I can't figure out what it is. What am I missing?

Is the c clip off of the shaft? there is a clip near the housing below the splines on the shaft. small screwdriver x 2 n some fiddling... also the key cylinder has a small bolt holding it in, then the rack n pinion rod for the keys can catch n hang up. a good light, some time n go slow, sometimes its easier to remove the whole column n put it on a bench n do your surgery... fishing the wires back thru it can be a real pia though.

I figured out that there are 3 screws that hold the 2 halves of the shroud together. I got it apart and replaced my switch but the spring for the key release lever fell off and now I can't figure out how it was on there. There are no pictures of non tilt columns on the net anywhere for reference. This is starting to get the best of me...

Re: Steering column help-desperate!

I had issues with my steering column a few months ago. There are some excellent websites detailing the complete assembly and disassembly of 80s GM tilt steering columns (most GM cars and trucks of that era used the same column, so don't limit your search to just trucks). Unfortunately I have them saved on my home computer and won't be home for a few weeks to pass them on, but an hour on google should get you started. If I remember correctly hot rod magazine had a decent description of such a rebuild for an 80s Malibu.

A word of caution though, they are very finiky to reassemble as there are a ton of gears, pins, screws, cables etc... that all need to be alligned for it to all work properly.

However, that being said, mine is a three on the tree on tilt, and quite a bit different than yours, and wasn't able to find any instructions for my exact model. There were three or four very good sites I found for your model.

I know this isn't much help, but hopefully it pointed you in the proper direction.

Not sure if you are still having this issue or not, but here are some great resources.
