title question help please
Ok im looking at a 68 shortbed a guy has for sale thats in Georgia and after going back and forth with him with pictures and what it would cost to have it shipped to Texas he said since his truck is more than 25 yrs old in Georgia they registered the truck in his name but didn't issue a title? Ever heard of that or will I have issues here in Texas getting a title for it? He said hes more than happy to get me any info I need and show his registration papers. I tried researching this but no luck. He gave me his first and last name with vin# also. Any info will be great I plan to talk to the dmv tomorrow.

Re: title question help please
Well I just got off the phone with my brother-in-law who lives in Georgia. He said that Georgia doesn't have titles for vehicles over 25 years old. However the current owner can go to his DMV in Georgia and request them to build one for the vehicle since he is selling it out of state. However I guess it will cost a good chunk of change (400 ish).
If you dont have a title for Texas your kinda screwed. Hope that answered your question. Good Luck. |
Re: title question help please
I think you can get a Ga title for around $20 or you could a few years ago ,just not needed here .

Re: title question help please
Bought mine from Alabama and AL doesn't issue titles on vehicles older than 1975 I think.
Just needed the registration and bill of sale and you're good to go with TX registration. If you get a young clerk at the DMV they'll give you weird look but figure it out. Nice looking truck. Welcome to the site! |
Re: title question help please
I'm from Bama also and Bama DOESN'T issue a title for anything below 1975.
I have heard that Georgia doesn't issue below 25 years also. |
Re: title question help please
i've never had a problem takin a registration from a state that didn't issue titles to my local dmv and having them issue a title for it when i went to register it to me

Re: title question help please
I have done it personally, I bought one out of SC without a title and to register in TN all you need is evidence of the fact the person that sold you the truck actually owns it. (Current Registration, Bill of Sale, etc.) I would also go to your local Police Dept and have them run the VIN on what they call 'the hot list'. I work in Public Safety.
Maybe call your DMV and just ask .. Hey if I bought it with a current registration and a bill of sale would I have any problem registering it in TX ? I wouldnt think so. Just my .02. I say buy it.. Good lookin truck. If it had a title, it would be worth $1500-2000 more. IF you want to go to the trouble of getting a title on it you can just about count on $2k profit even to flip it. Good luck man. |
Re: title question help please
Yeah I just spoke with the local dmv and all I need is a bill of sale and registration paper from him thats it...now just have to see about shipping cost..thanks again

Re: title question help please
I had this to happen to in 2000 when I got my 67 camaro it was from new york and new york does not print tiles for vehicles before 1972 I live in VA and VA is one of the most hardcore about having everything perfect at the dmv but I got online and it is ilegal for states the issue titles to refuse to issue a title for a vehicle legally purchased from a state that does not issue titles , I walked in the dmv with a registration from new york they instantly said WE CAN'T GIVE YOU A TITLE SORRY ! So I insisted that they had to and told them I was not leaving to call richmond or whatever butthat I had purrchased this car from a state that did not issue titles on vehicles before 1972 and I am a va resident and I wanted title and tags TODAY ! I Left with a VA. Title in my name .

To the OP: Congrats! Great looking truck. Quite a few states don't issue titles on vehicles over a certain age, I think NY is 1973 and older. |

Re: title question help please
Yeah, reason I know so much is I have a 67 Firebird my dad and I had worked on when I was like 7 or 8. My dad never got the registration for it (NY uses registration for 1973 and older, no title) for the car... it was the mid 80's... my dad had the registration to like 10 other cars... wink wink... but when I got the car, it had all the correct tags, everything matched, original paint under interior matched... so I wanted the correct title. Puttered around with different options in SC off and on for months. It just wasn't going to happen. I even called a couple title services that charge a grand + and they both said because of SC, they may have trouble getting me a title for it.
I knew the car wasn't stolen (my dad knew the guy he bought it from, he says he lost the registration) and I ran the VIN on it. Fast forward to August. I went to NY to visit my family (wedding) and brought a picture and tracing of the VIN. My dad remembered the name and address of the last owner from like 1984. We took that info to the DMV, we were there all of 15 minutes and I walked out with a legal NY registration. The car was somehow in the computer system, even though it was last registered in NY in the early 80's! I still don't get that... Moral of the story? Don't buy a car in SC without a title unless you have a definite way around it. |
