Is my cargo light supposed to work only when the door is open?

If should be operated by a switch on the b pillar, close to the seatbelt. On my freinds 85, it would work whenever the switch was on the on position. It didn't matter if the door was opened or closed.

On mine, the dome light has to be on for the switch/light to work.

Ok, mine is an 86. The cargo light does come on when you open the door, or turn on the dome light (when the b pillar switch is on). I thought that the one on my 87 was independent of the dome, but I could be wrong. Thanks guys.
