07 Silverado 2500 6.0l lifters ticking??
 

This truck when first started seems to run fine. After it gets warmed up. The lifters start rattling. Is it time for a cam and lifters? Oh it has 174k on the clock. When this truck gets used, which is pretty often, it has a 20ft box trailer hooked to it. Just looking for some advice on where to start looking.

On these motors, do you have to pull the heads to get the lifters out? I've put head gaskets on a 04 with the 4.8L( I don't remember how the lifters are designed)
I think I would rather pull the motor out than , pull the heads with motor in the truck. Mainly because of having to use the angle gauge to torque the head bolts.

I'll take the truck out monday morning. I'll try to get a video of it. Or pay better attention to what its actually doing.

It was cold Monday here, I started the ole truck up. It wasn't ticking or any lifter rattle. When it got warmed up, it didn't really start ticking as it usually does. Wondering if the cold had something to do with that. I wasn't easy on it. I pushed it pretty good, while pulling the trailer. I'll have to keep an eye on it better next time I've got the truck out.

What Kind of Engine Oil to Use
Look for three things:
• GM6094M
Use only an oil that meets GM Standard GM6094M.
• SAE 5W-30
SAE 5W-30 is best for the vehicle. These numbers
on an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness.
Do not use other viscosity oils such as SAE 20W-50.
• American Petroleum Institute (API) starburst symbol
Oils meeting these
requirements should have
the starburst symbol on
the container. This symbol
indicates that the oil
has been certified by the
American Petroleum
Institute (API).
Notice: Use only engine oil identified as meeting
GM Standard GM6094M and showing the American
Petroleum Institute Certified For Gasoline Engines
starburst symbol. Failure to use the recommended
oil can result in engine damage not covered by
the vehicle warranty.
Cold Temperature Operation
If in an area of extreme cold, where the temperature falls
below −20°F (−29°C), use either an SAE 5W-30 synthetic
oil or an SAE 0W-30 engine oil. Both provide easier cold
starting for the engine at extremely low temperatures.
Always use an oil that meets the required specification,
GM6094M.

Sounds like a cheap oil is being used.

I posted because a friend of mine has a 99 and got a 05. He was thinking both gm same eng so same oil. No the 05 Uses a oil that meets GM Standard GM6094M.

What I am saying is the requirements change.

you do have to pull the heads to do the lifters. 174k on the stock lifters with a lot of towing, could be the problem. You live in Tenn according to your profile so no reason the 5w30 wouldn't be ok. Its not like your in Siberia. lol
