My starter makes a weird sound. Let me know what you think?
By the way I have a 350-350.

2 things come to mind here:

1 it most likely the starter needs shimmed away from the block, sounds like the teeth are engaging too deep in the flywheel.
2 Almost everyone discards the brace that goes from the end of the motor, up to the block for support. recommend finding on and installing it, they help keep the starter from torqueing against the bolts. These are only on the starters with straight across bolt pattern. Starters with the staggered pattern generally do not have them.

I would say shim in a little too. If your tranny inspection cover is off, see if you can see wear marks on the flywheel and how deep they are.

if a small block starter is correct and flywheel is correct, with starter brace in place....no shims should be needed.

sometimes the starter drive gets warped.. this is what it sounds like... the sooner you repair this the less money and labor will be involved.... if it goes too long the flywheel/flexplate will have to be changed..

Sorry guys, I guess an little more information is needed:

After making this video I have replace the staggered bolt pattern, nose cone starter with a high performance 2.0kw, straight mount starter. The hesitation you hear in the video is gone and the engine kicks-over strong and fast.... but the screeching sound is still there just a little less.

The new starter came with 2 kinds of shims. I had to use the ones to mount it away from the block. But I did not use the internal shims to pull the engaging gear away from the fly wheel.

And I can't see any ware marks on the fly wheel.

Still engaging too deep in the flywheel it sounds like. The starter drive should only engage approx. 1/2 of the tooth depth of the flywheel.

Did your new starter come with instructions with measurements on how to shim it?

Wasn't sure if you installed a mini starter or just a higher cranking original type.
Sounds like you need to install the other shim.
