I've read on here that the 72s have longer adjusting arms that may solve your problem.

I just noticed that you are in Queen Creek. Send forum tkorinek (Tom Korinek) a PM and ask if he has one. He's in Mesa and sells on the parts board and local swap meets.

Here's an old thread with a picture.

So if I find a 72 bracket you think it will make up for the tall covers?

No problem. The Corvettes also had longer braces/ arms. Here's a link to Corvette Central. I searched the 63-67 years for "alternator brace". They look even longer. Be sure to select a left side brace if you have your alternator in the original location. If they are too long, you can always shorten them and re-drill the hole.

I can't say for sure, but if the rear of your alternator is hitting valve cover, a longer brace will allow it to swing farther outboard. You'd need a longer belt also.

You'll probably want both lower/upper brackets for the corvette ones. I had the same trouble, though we just relocated the stock bracket (top) and got a longer belt. There are pics in my thread.

So the solution ended up being I bought a belt for a 72 instead of a 69 removed my valve cover that allowed alternator to loosen enough to put belt on then tightened alternator in place then put valve cover back on everything seems to work we will see when I put engine back in:gmc2:
