Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
3 Attachment(s)
I got a used boot from Cardone ( for free, thumbs up to them ), but it would be good to know this part number and I couldn't see it in any of the usual places. Here are the pictures. The inside diameter of the round end is about 1.925 inches. Theends look like they will fit the booster and firewall, but is has kind of an odd offset and is canted at an angle. I'll try and fit it in this weekend.
I am guessing there are any number of names for this, but the number would be useful. |

As a followup, I installed this boot in my power brake upgrade and it fit nicely in the Cardone booster so I'm good... ...would still be good to have a part number though. Probably not news if you have power brakes already, but would be good to know if you're doing the power conversion. I will post this with the power conversion thread info.

Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
I have a question about this boot. I took my booster off and noticed that a mouse had chewed through the bottom, does this boot provide any function or is it just asthetics?
Thanks |
Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
Since it's kinda hard to see in the installed position I doubt its primary function is aesthetic.
I would imagine it is more to keep corrosion and debris off the rod. Since the mouse chewed the bottom side I would think you could just patch it and be ok. K |
Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
I think it has a protective function. There's the obvious seal on the firewall on the right hand side in the picture, but what I was worried about was the sliding part in the booster. If you operate the brakes with boot off, you'll see that there is a sleeve which moves in and out of the booster body and looks to be a fairly close fit. My concern was that if dirt and whatever built up on the sleeve it could damage the booster or cause that sleeve to bind up. Also, I didn't want crud getting into the booster and around the booster rod.
But I think if you could patch it up it would still do the job - or if you find a place where you can buy one let us know what the part number is. I also just finished replacing a $50 ignition coil on a riding mower because a mouse chewed the spark wire off of it, and just before that a set of plug wires on my car. Not happy with mice. btw - I grew up in Oakville, but moved the US around about the time my truck was made ( total coincidence ). |
Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
Thanks for info guys, I just wanted to know cuz after putting my booster and master cylinder back together the booster doesn't work. But I just got the truck and I could tell it was leaking and when I put it back together it leaked all over the fresh paint on the booster. So now I have a hard pedal and I'm trouble shooting - most likely the booster.
C10 - Oakville has probably changed a whole lot since you moved - I live in Whitby beside oshawa - where a lot of these trucks were made back in the day. Oakville is very expensive - although what isn't up around here now. And yeah mice are a pain for sure. |

Oshawa, Flint (2 lines), St Louis, Janesville, Fort Wayne and Pontiac were some of the plants I supported. K |
Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
Keith that's crazy - I remember seeing your intro post.
Kind of off topic but I see you moved around from plants - I recently read rivethead and the guy talks about the plant work being shifted down to southern plants I'm guessing you were working in similar circumstances? My brother in law works at the Oshawa Plant - he's been there over 10 years now. |

What Ben Hamper (the Rivethead) was talking about were hourly employees that were transferred to a new permanent location when their home plant closed. For example, if you worked in Pontiac and the plant closed you might get transferred to Fort Wayne (or Oshawa) to try and keep a job. You'd buy a house and put down roots (or decide on a hellish commute) and work there until the next significant emotional event. In my case I was always resident at "Central Office" engineering and was part of a rag tag circus that went from plant to plant to help launch new product. So we would start at Flint (or Pontiac) and get them up and running, then move as a team temporarily to St Louis or Oshawa or Janesville until all the plants were pumping out new product. But home base for me was always in Pontiac or Warren Michigan depending on where our office was at the time. K |

Shugalou, as I'm sure you know the other thing about Oakville is that it's where Ford's Ontario Truck Plant is. My dad worked there, and I was an intern at Ford Engineering in Dearborn, MI.
But I still ended up with a Chevy truck! |

We spend quite a bit of time down there, mostly at Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village, the Fairlane Estate and at the Edsel Ford Estate (in St Clair Shores) for various activities. K |

Keith,
No, I wound up in the oil business, in Texas now. If there's anyone who can appreciate the ups and downs like the car industry has had though, it's someone in the oil business. I haven't been back that much, just once for a wedding at Fair Lane some years ago. |
Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
I know this thread is old, but where do you get that boot? I just went from manual brakes to a brake booster and can not find it for sale anywhere. I actually thought it would look much different than that.
Thanks for your help! |

No problem. Sent you a pm

Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
I'm glad this thread popped up. I have recently ran into this exact same issue.
I just put a replacement brake booster on my truck and to my surprise the old one simply did not fit and nobody seems to carry this part. Anyone have any information on what a 73 chevy came with? |
Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
This isn't the same, but looks like it will do the trick if I can't find the original style.

Keith and C10 I realized I never responded to either of you in the post.
Both are cool stories |
Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
Pilot,
I'm not sure if the part from ebay will fit a '73 ( it might ) but I know it won't fit an '80. If you think it will fit the '73 though, I will give you the same part for free. ( I offered it up for free earlier but there were no takers ). http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=621210 |
Re: Brake booster Boot part number? ( with pictures )
Shugalou,
Definitely - very good stories! If you don't already have it, I hope you get the truck back. |
