Air horns/Compressor heat?
 

I've been working on installing some air horns in the truck. I have them mounted in the engine compartment and today I mounted my new Viair tank/compressor behind the seat.

I still need to run the line and wire up the compressor and air valve.

Question I have is about the heat of the compressor motor. Where I have it mounted it ends up the back of the vinyl seat comes into contact with the very top of the compressor (highest point). It doesn't actually contact the motor housing.

How hot do these motors get? Will it melt the back of my seat? Could I put some heat shield between them?

Any suggestions?

I don't know about the heat, but I would think the noise of the compressor would drive you nuts.

Hi, I have that same compressor I was using for my air bags for a while, I think it gets too hot to be near the seat, It is going to be too loud in the cab for you also. Bolt it to the side of the frame rail behind the cab. The cool part is your truck will have spare slot in the center of the fuse box that comes on with the key that is perfect for powering your pump. You can just plug it in,

Some reviews I've read said the compressor isn't as loud as you would think. I will move it if necessary to the frame.

Guess I'll fire it up and test the temp/sound level and go from there.

It'll burn that vinyl for sure I have burns from the head of my old viair. Loud slow and obnoxious. I left the two I had in for spares and went with a edc York 210. Best investment ever never waiting on air.

Sorry my compressors where filling 15 gallons. And I'm switch happy so they where always buzzing. It might not get that Hot with a short cycle. Hope it works out for ya but definatly noisy

Thanks, I don't expect it to be running much. Short burst of the horn is about it. Plus the truck is loud too.

12 volt air compressors, first of all a electric air compressor gets hot, and it will get even hotter if you starve it for voltage. rig it up with a 12 volt relay and heavy gauge wire. Making sure it has enough amps will help hold the heat down but it will still get hot and I would not put it inside the cab of the truck. I quit running 12 volt compressors because of the noise and lack of ability to produce enough air quickly.........Kieth JMO

As mentioned in a earlier post a York air conditioning compressor (210 ?) it is a old style piston A/C compressor that one can add oil to and it provides compressed air really quickly and one can find them for $25.00 at the salvage. Old Volvos used them so a import salvage is the place to go to find one. They of course run off the front belt system and have a electric clutch. They produce lots of air and the problems with 12 volt compressors ends when these are used. Rock crawler 4 x 4 guys use them.....

here is a link: you of course only running a air horn will not need to go to this extreme, but guys who have full air ride and want to raise and lower the vehicle need a lot more air than you do.
