dumb axle question
 

so i pulled my rear diff cover off and i bunch of teeth are messed up in the carrier, going to put a new locker in, i have a 84 k10, my question is....and this may be dumb to most of you but I've never done this before, when i goto order the gears (I'm swapping gears too) and they ask for the carrier like "28 spline" or "30 spline" what am i counting? the splines on the pinion gear or the splines coming from the axle shafts? i feel waaaaay dumb asking this...i didn't even ask my buddy i was just talking to haha
