Transmission Help
Greetings all,
I am new here. I bought a 1964 C-10 LWB Stepside to restore. I'm trying to keep everything original, the 230 straight six, the Muncie 318 3 speed, and the three on the tree shifter. I've got everything torn down to the frame and I've started back up. I ordered a rebuild kit for the transmission, but when I opened it up, I found broken teeth on every gear. Someone took the phrase, "If you can't find em, grind em!" very seriously. So, I need to find the gears to finish my rebuild. Anyone know a good source? Anyone got an extra 318 Muncie laying around? Thanks for your help. Cheers, Dennis |
Re: Transmission Help
Man....I just gave one away 2 weeks ago. Check with member Sharps40...I believe he has an extra one in Sanford that just needs a home.

Re: Transmission Help
Sorry, couldn't give away that old muncy and it was headed to the scrap yard for 9cents per pound with the original drive shaft when the T5 was installed.
Best I can tell ya is call Gordon Paint and Body in Sanford NC. He swapped the trans in Oct for me.....there is a small chance its still sittin on the floor with the driveshaft. Owners name is Chad Gordon, tell him Rich sent ya on a quest for that trans. It ran great but noisy and leaked up front cause the slinger was worn. Never cracked it open so can't say if the gears was good or bad. Most of the rest is lil odd bits no one wants just havn't gotten to the scrapper yet. |
Re: Transmission Help
I could use that driveshaft if he still has it Rich for my other 63.
Called him and he said I could come get the driveshaft Saturday morning |
Re: Transmission Help
Try these guys for parts or info.

Re: Transmission Help
Chad is a most excellent fella! And he and the crew do most excellent work.

Re: Transmission Help
Well, if the DS is still there, its possible the tranny is to. OP prolly should ring him up...might be a good score and there's likely to be one or three good parts in that old muncy.

Re: Transmission Help
If your around Sat morning Rich I could link up with you while in Sanford.

Re: Transmission Help
I'll be home....tweakin the truck and cleanin up the yard and paintin the garage cealing.
I think the boys are gonna let me have my garage for sat, Sunday I spect I'll be out in the driveway as they continue the whoreing of a once beautiful 350Z with plastidip and tigerhair and I think they are gonna try to butcherfix a beemer fender instead of simply replacing it. I think I'll go to the gun range sunday....I'm cosigned on the 350Z and watchin hurts! Come over and take all these parts if ya want em...I need the space. Still got the bed steel too if ya want that, otherwise I'll cut it up for scrap. |
Re: Transmission Help
Ok, sounds good. I meet him at 9, then I'll head your way. PM me your address again or I'll get lost in Lee Co. I'll pick up the other parts....probably won't need the bed steel....kinda going a different direction on the bed floor. D you want me to bring the 2 speed wiper w/washer option for you?
|
Re: Transmission Help
PM headin in. Na, hang on to that two speed for swapin goods. I got a good one speed and I may put on a delay at some point. Or sell it cause that big block is gonna suck all the Octane outta yer wallet once ya kick it over and start drivin! HA! See ya sat.

Re: Transmission Help
Thanks for the help guys. If the trans had some noise in it, then it likely had the same issues as mine. So, I called the guys at All Trans in Greenville S.C. They said they can help me out with parts.
Again, I appreciate it. Dennis |
Re: Transmission Help
Could always pick up Sharps40's old trans for parts...

Re: Transmission Help
I'm confused. I thought it was gone already.

Re: Transmission Help
Actually, they all have some noise in em at 49ish years old. I know my joints creak. But a bit of whine don't mean missing teeth in the trans or my head! Luck to ya.
1963C10......ya might as well bring kitty litter to sop up the spilled oil cause I reckon when ya get there ye'll want the tranny too! |

If the DS is still there the tranny might be too...it means Chad didn't make the junk run yet. If you want it its prolly free, call Chad at Gordon Paint and Body, Sanford NC. He's usually in the shop till 5 or so on Thursdays. |

Do as Sharps40 said and call him. I can pick it up and bring it to Fayetteville if its any closer for you than Sanford. I'm 10min off I-95 |
Re: Transmission Help
Ok, so I called Chad. He said it is still there. When I asked him if he'd sell it to me, he said I would have to talk to the owner. That's why it hasn't been hauled off yet, he doesn't think it belongs to him. I could probably use it for parts if the ownership issues can be resolved. Who holds the title?? Ha ha.

Re: Transmission Help
I'll call him....hang tight, might still be there, either way I'll leave him a message and get back to ya.

Re: Transmission Help
1963C10 and Dwmillsap
Chad still has the trans and I think the driveshaft is already worked out between C10 and Chad. He wanted to be sure, he's an honest fella and with two calls preferred to hear from me. I'd told him to do as he pleases with them but busy as a beaver with the snow and ice and deer strikes and well,....business is good.....so he likely forgot. I told him I'd have you call back during business hours (M-T 9 to 5, F 9 to 4, usually closed weekends but often there paintin and stuff.) So, as far as I'm concerned you and Chad work it out....I told him scrap it, sell it or give the trans and drive shaft away....the final decisions are up to and between yall. Luck to ya...hope the trans and drive shaft make both yer projects roll down the road! I am absolutely positive Chad will work with ya and be tickled to get that iron off his shop floor! |
Re: Transmission Help
OK, cool. I will give him a call tomorrow. My wife tells me there are quilt shops in Sanford, who knew? So, a road trip may be brewing. Thanks, I appreciate the help. Got a call from the engine shop today and all the machining on my 230 6 cyl is done. It was bored, shaved, new valve seats, main bearings, rod bearings, new timing gears, new camshaft and lifters, new oil pump, etc. So, I'm excited to get it all back together. The transmission will help harness that massive 6 cylinder power!! Cheers.

Re: Transmission Help
Very cool. love them 6s. Sanford has a small old town shoppin and arts area. Neat. They say the Steel pig on steel street is good chow.. a decent bar an sammich shop an momma will like one or both of the tea rooms.
Im round most weekends and evenings. Holler when yer around. We can tell lies bout our trucks over an R-O-C Co Cola. |
Re: Transmission Help
Also. Dont feel bad bout the 6. They are the better motors. 8s go fast for a while but 6s work hard longer and ya cant loaf round town in an 8...they got no guts for loafin round in high gear.
