Jeep cherokee steering joint replacing the rag joint
My rag joint is wore out on my 65 Chevy steering shaft and I was looking at replacing it when I came across a thread where a Guy done away with his rag joint and put a 90s Jeep cherokee telescoping UV joint or whatever they have on his truck. He said it's a direct replacement with no modifications at all.It takes some of the slope out of the steering that a rag joint has in it and it gives you more clearance. Now here's the problem he never said what year and I don't know what the part is called.I also can't find anymore information on this or anything.I'm going to need it replaced soon so if I can find out what I mere from the Jeep I'll go ahead and order it. Can someone shed light on this modification and what all I need and what year I need it from thank you.

Re: Jeep cherokee steering joint replacing the rag joint
I've never used the Jeep part, but bought mine from Speedway Motors- made by Sweet MFG.
If you've still got the stock column and steering box, you will have to cut the shaft off and weld the new end on, because the rag joint flange is made onto the steering column shaft. The shaft is 3/4" so you'll need one end of the u-joint 3/4" smooth(weld on type) The other end will be either: IF you do still have the stock steering box the splined end will need to be 3/4" X 36 spline. OR IF you have a '67-78 Power steering box the splines are 13/16" X 36 spline Not sure what the 1979 and newer is, as I never use those steering boxes. Put the u-joint on the steering box splines hold the shaft up to measure and cut it off so it will be 1" into the smooth bore of the u-joint. Then weld the u-joint to the shaft. Takes about an hour or less to do. |

The use of the Jeep intermediate shaft that I have typically heard of is with the Squarebodies in a 4x4 application.
