Rebuilding Family Heirloom '65
 

I have inherited a 65 Chevy C10 pickup that was originally purchased by my great uncle new and used as a farm truck. Years later, the inline 6 wasn't beefy enough to tow livestock, so he sold the truck to my grandfather. Years later, my grandfather sold it to his son, my uncle. My uncle had a transmission issue in late 91/early 92 and never figured out the problem, and left the truck sitting in his yard until he passed away in 2009. My grandfather gave the truck to me, and now I'm looking to restore it.

My first goal is to get it back on the road, as I'm on a budget being a newlywed, and saving for house and hoping to have our first child within a couple of years. I have purchased the 63-66 Shop Manuals.

Obviously, the first step is to figure out the transmission. I have two 3 speed transmissions in the bed, but no transmission control rods. Any idea where I can find the control rods?

Welcome aboard! Nice truck! For $25 bucks a year you can become a Premium member and post Want to buy, for sale, and whats it worth ads. The three speed on the column controls aren't to hard to come by. :chevy:

Your paint looks original-ish and complete, though terribly oxidized.
If you look at my HRSaR (64 Tow Truck) truck you will see that it is in a similar boat just not as far along as yours is.
All you need to do is add some WD40 to some paste car wax, or polishing compound like Turtle Wax, and go at it.
You will be amazed at how quickly and easily you can restore that paint on there.
There are a couple of guys doing it right now, hopefully they will chime in, otherwise I will link their builds to you so you can see how well this works.

Thanks McMurphy! Outside of routine car maintenance, I'm a complete newbie at this. It's going to be a long and slow road of rebuilding this truck, but I can't wait! I feel confidence in this site guiding me each step of the way.

Thanks Captainfab. I haven't thoroughly inspected every inch, but appears I only have a little bit of rust on the body to deal with. The doors appear to have no rust on the bottom of them. The passenger kickplate has virtually none, however the driver side is rusted through about two inches from the kickplate in, so that will need to be patch. Obviously the bumpers and the grill are rusted, but those are minor things to me for now. I plan on rat rodding the truck for now and slowly making it purty.

Welcome and cool find. Looks pretty complete. And PM sent on the trans control rods.
