Anyone ever seen one of these "CHEVROLET" tags on front suspension

Noticed when I was cleaning up the new fleetside when we brought it home 2 weeks ago that it has an aluminum tag on the driver side upper cross shaft. Has "CHEVROLET" stamped in it. I've never seen one before and just curious as to what it is.

My guess is a an assembly line inspection tag normally removed by the dealership, but I could be way off base. Any help would be appreciated. All the front suspension is stock still riveted in.

I'll try and clean up the tag a little more tonight and post some better pics.

That's pretty neat!

Its just loosely strapped around the upper cross shaft between the two bolts. I've just never seen one before? I'm guessing something with quality control on the assembly line, but I could be way off coarse. Its around 3" long as its attached....around 6" long if it was laid flat.

I remember buying an upper control arm from the dealer for a Nova back in the early 70's

It came in a giant paper bag inside a wooden box when I opened it I noticed it had a tag just like that. I cut it off and put it on my key ring.

It is possible to replace the cross shafts without removing any rivots....maybe that's the answer. Might have been a dealer or PO repair with an OEM part, hence the tag.

It was placed there buy the front suspension supplier, as an aid in assembly and to enable verification by the assembly line inspector.

Thanks Keith. So its worth preserving when I rebuild the front end. I'll probably remove when I get to the point of restoring the truck and add it to the trucks documentation. Just something I hadn't seen before. Were these normally removed by the dealer, assembly line or the owners?

Owners, if anybody. They probably just fell off.

It was not a requirement to remove them on the assembly line or at the dealer. I know my '87 still has one wrapped around one of the spindles.

Thanks for the info on this Keith. Its got one more project ahead of it yet, and looks like its stayed in place since 63, so I think it'll just stay put until I get to the front end rebuild on that one.

Its nice to still see something unfamiliar on these trucks. We'll see what the next mystery holds. Thanks again....Jon.
