71 pinion shims, no locating pins?
Guys
I have shims to adjust my pinion angle. They are slotted on one side so they just slip over the ubolt instead of having to pull the ubolt out and thread the ubolt through I have ECE trailing arms. I have no locating pins on the 12bolt rear, and the ECE arms dont have anything to help locate the rear The ubolts would normally be fine to locate everything together, but now, what holds these slip in shims? To make matters worse, i have 2 shims on each side because the guy didnt have 4 deg shims in stock, so he sent me 2.5s and 1.5s. Will the ubolt torqued up be enough to keep these shims from coming out? maybe i need to make my own pins out of a cut down bolt? at least the shims wouldnt come out of the rear and the ubolts hold the rear to the arms thoughts? thanks! |

You could install and torque then bolts then with a mig tack the bottom one to the arm and the first to the second. Do small tacks 1/2 at most that's all you need. That way if you need to remove them you cut the bottom one and its out. One tack in the front is enough.

theyre aluminum shims but i could weld a couple of stops on the rear and the plate to hold them in. im thinking the cutoff bolt as a locating pin might be easier though..
think its safe to drive a little bit? id like to make sure the shims fixed my vibration and then ill put new ubolts in (these ubolts only have 200 miles on them, but i hear youre not supposed to reuse them) |
Re: 71 pinion shims, no locating pins?
I just installed 1.5 degree pinion shims. My U bolts are new from a previous install. I backed the Nuts off far enough to slide/pound the sims in. Then re-torqued to 200 ft lbs. Torque spec is 175 to 225 ft lbs. I'll probably retorque in the future but I'm not worried about the bolts coming off. Getting new bolts is a good idea.
