Power steering help

I am looking to rebuild my father in-laws 68 C10 and one of the first things on my list is to install power steering on it. Could anyone possibly list all the parts needed for this conversion?

The truck is 2wd with a 327 in it.

Thanks
-Tony

Re: Power steering help

Welcome to the site well first off you need to determine if the water pump is the original type short or the later long type. Then you need the pump and brackets and belts of course. New hoses are the way to go unless you are for sure the ones you get don't leak when you get the pump. The steering box will have to be changed and you can replace it with a power type from a truck up to 87 model year. Know this that some time in the late 70's the General when to a metric type fitting and it will either need new hoses or an adapter or unscrew the big nut at the back of the pump[ that holds the pressure regulator ] and it can simply be switched out and that changes it to the newer style pump ends. You will also need a idler arm and pit man arm for the power steering, they need changing anyway most likely. One last thing you need a new Rag Joint that goes between the newer box and the steering arm coming from the colum. Jim

If you type in power steering in the search 67-72 trucks.com in the box above youcwn find numerous threads on this. I'm currently doing this conversion to my 68 .

Re: Power steering help

Thanks for the help guys. I spend the morning at the wrecking yard getting a pump and gear box. I couldn't believe how many of the chevy trucks had the power steering pumps taken already.

Hope u got the pulleys and brackets & hoses at the same time. If not, I'd go back and get the ones that the pump/box came off of. This way, all lines up with no hunting around for various pulleys that might "possibly" match but "probably" will not! Also, if the pressure hose is too used up, at least you have the pattern for the correct end(s) when u buy a new pressure hose.
Sam
