My daughters vinyl wrapped 72'
 

I started this thread under "my daughters 72'", but I figured this was a better title. I picked up the truck today. The truck was previously just primer. I decided to have it wrapped instead of painted. It came out great and should last from 5 to 7 years as long as you take care of it. The cost was reasonable and you take care of it the same as paint.

My daughter picked the color, but I wish she wanted the top white and the body blue. Oh well, it is her truck when she turns 16.

That looks great! How does it look in person? How does it look in the door jamb area?

I saw a plasti-dipped BMW recently and really liked that and was considering that pending cost....would you mind sharing what this cost?

Wow...If you didn't tell us it was wrapped, I bet no one online could tell! Looks great. Makes me feel good to hear that it's your daughters truck. As a dad of a daughter myself (she's 13), I think it's awesome when I hear that a father/daughter are into cars. I was raised in the hot rod/street rod world my whole life and so has my daughter. She loves cars,trucks, and boats as much as I do! Exactly like me when I was growing up. Good luck on the truck and keep that bond going for as long as you can! By the way, good choice of year and of color. I have a blue '72 as well (and my daughter tells everyone that it is hers).

Thanks for the compliments. It looks great in person too. The truck has some minor waves and some rough surfaces so the wrap shows these area's just as a paint job would. The door jambs look very good because Chris (Vinyl Ink owner) did a great job of wrapping it deep.

The trucks inner bed was not wrapped, just the top rails, so I will have to address this later. I will probably put a rubber bed liner down and rattle can the bed sidewals black until i can get the bed rhino lined. I will take more close up pics and post them later in the week.

On the decision for a C10 for my daughter, she likes the old school trucks and so do I, so it was an easy pick. I grew up and learned to drive on a 69' C10 long bed with 3 in the tree and no power anything.

There are a few things I need to do before she turns 16 and its hers to drive. I need to replace the front disc rotors and then a 4/6 Early Classics drop kit. And as all of you know, there will be more things here and there to do. When she is done with the truck and it will be mine again to play with again.

The cost was reasonable. It was $2200. We can't buy Plasti Dip in gallons in California so that option was out. The shop I used, Vinyl Ink in Fremont, CA. has wrapped several cars including a Nissan GTR in chrome, an Astin Martin in chrome, and he has a Mercedes Gull Wing coming in next week to be wrapped in gold chrome.

The high end cars you see in colors that are not factory, flat black, grey, camo etc, are usually vinyl wraps. The wrap protects the paint underneath and when removed properly leaves no residue.

I didn't want to do a cheap paint job and then have to do it over in 3-5 years. The vinyl wrap made sense to me, and when I get the truck back it will be easy to change the color if I want.

Truck looks fantastic! I hope my kids take an interest in classic cars too someday.
So, it looks like you're around the east bay area. Are you going to take the truck to the car show in Pleasanton May 31/ June 1?
I'd really like to see how your truck looks in person. Seems like a good alternative to paint.

I'm going to try to make the Goodguys show in June. And my daughters first C10 was a 71 with a 4/6 drop, but I will remind her. I'm adding some close up pics of the wrap to help answer some questions.

That looks really good to me! I hope you will keep us updated on how well it holds up. If it really lasts 5 to 7 years, I would say that is a good option.

I've got a couple of trucks that need painted, but the last one cost me 6500 and that was about 7 years ago. I just wish I lived closer to someone that did wraps and I would try one.

$3200 to have my truck painted in the original red in base coat/clear coat. That was 5 years ago now.

Who ever you got to do it did an awesome job! There is a guy here that buys old trucks at the auction with bad paint and wraps them and flips them and does pretty darn good off it.

Thanks for the nice comments :chevy:. I decided on the wrap for cost reasons and knowing this C10 will be parked in a high school parking lot . If a door or side panel gets scratched it would be about $100 to remove and replace that wrapped panel. When the truck becomes mine again I will probably paint it, but only after the proper body work is done.

I was told that vinyl doesn't stick that well on primer. I have a fleet of vans that get vinyl decals put on when new, and I asked the installer, which we've used for 10 years or so if I could wrap my new cowl hood. He said I could but it wouldn't stick all that good. He said vinyl sticks best to a painted smooth surfaces. I still might do it because it would allow me to try Rally stripes, flames, etc. and when I didn't like them, or got bored with them I could peel them off and try a different arrangement.
He also said that since it's printed on the vinyl, custom is just a matter of getting the design digitized and they will print it. He said it would probably be less than a couple hundred $$.

As for removing this wrap. I happen to be very good at that. I have used many different methods from heat guns to torches, to cold removal and solvent removal of the subsequent glue residue. All of these work, but each has it's dangers to the paint job. In the end, the best way to remove the vinyl is steam. You can rent a steamer, or pick one up pretty cheap. No danger to the paint, and only danger to you if you do something silly.

I love the look of the truck and hope it lasts for years and years!:gi:

2200 initially sounds like a lot for a shrink wrap job but that one actually looks real good. It has a good shine to it. I've wondered about those corners and tight places, just how well it would lay down. That one looks good.
Our company is having our 53' van trailers wrapped. Seems like the price was $5,000 each and that's all flat surfaces.
