Re: 1989 Help

By burning oil you mean it smokes when you start it? what color is the smoke? White, blue, black? Do you get an engine light when you lose power?

Re: 1989 Help

Yes it smokes blue smoke when it starts up and yes the check engine light comes on around the same time that the engine starts to lose power. However sometimes the truck just will not accelerate and there is no sign of problems with gauges or check engine light

Retrieve the trouble code/codes.

Let us know what you find.
Blue smoke on start up sounds like valve seals.

I found that i don't have the ALDL connector. My dad and i looked all over passenger and driver side dash. Could it be located anywhere else?

Re: 1989 Help

Everything I've read including pictures I've seen says it should be there but it's not. My dad has one on his truck we know what they look like. This truck doesn't have one.

Re: 1989 Help

I found the port and got the error code 32 which was the EGR valve could that be causing the engine bogging down and loosing power

Re: 1989 Help

Yes that could easily be it.

Re: 1989 Help

Generally code 32 gets set from lack of EGR function.

To much EGR operation can cause a noticeable lack of power.

Re: 1989 Help

I recently replaced the EGR and still having momentary losses of power. Drove the truck without the air cleaner and had no problems. Could this be a air/fuel ration problem?

Concerning your check engine light issue....

Replacing the EGR valve might or might not solve your trouble code. The intake manifold often gets clogged with carbon which is the root of the check engine light. The EGR valve functions perfectly, but with clogged passages, you're gonna get a code. The way to check it is to start engine and let it idle. Now, grab the EGR valve and open it with your fingers. The engine should stumble significantly. If not, you've got clogged intake manifold passages.

Concerning the power issue......

I'll quote your first post in this thread. "The engine revs high and does not deliver on the power then suddenly after a few seconds the power is all there wondering what is the problem"

You've got a transmission or drivetrain issue, not an engine issue. Sounds like trans slipping if its an auto or clutch slipping if its a standard.
