Starting issue when hot.....?
I have a '66 with an I6 250 Hi Torque motor that was having tempremental starter issues, so I have fitted a brand new starter n solenoid that I had and it appeared to start up fine. However I took it for a run today and it doesn't want to start when hot? The dash lights all come on but I get nothing, no solenoid click or anything? But then when I came to leave the show it started up fine?
Drove over to a friends workshop to look at his cars on the way home and again it started up fine when i came to leave his????? Are there amy known issues that I should check first? |

Re: Starting issue when hot.....?
Oooo thanks @doobiebro that has helped to explain a fair bit to me.
I thought that the heat issue with starters was mainly on the V6 and V8s with the starter being near the headers, which isn't the case on an I6 as the manifold is on the opposite side to the starter.....? Weird. Thanks again dude. :) |
Re: Starting issue when hot.....?
I had a similar issue when my distributor was advanced...it would crank...stop for a split second then crank and fire off...I retarded the distributor a little and now when hot it takes half a crank and it lights right off. But my starter is also 48 years old to. lol I'm considering a reman here soon. Hope you fix your problem easily! :chevy:

Re: Starting issue when hot.....?
Well I've ruled out heat sink as the problem with the truck as I went to use it tonight and it wouldn't start from cold. Same thing, turned key, ign lights on, turned to engage starter and nothing, no click or anything so I'm now thinking bad earth, dodgy battery, dodgy starter switch or dodgy wiring from switch to starter.....?
Guess I'm gona have to get someone over who knows auto electrics to diagnose it for me...... Also looks like I might not of needed the new starter, still that can't be a bad thing having a new one fitted I guess.... |
Re: Starting issue when hot.....?
Sounds like the backend bushing is worn out. When hot they expand and won't allow starter to spin and start truck. very easy fix, oil impregnated bushing replacement and grease.

Re: Starting issue when hot.....?
Tried to start the truck tonight and it fired up first time no issues at all, left it running for 20 mins, turned it off, checked voltages etc and then turned the key again and it started straight back up.........?
The only thing I have changed is i've disconnected the horn from the steering wheel and at the relay under the bonnet and tightened the loose steering wheel. I have read that the horn relay can affect starting on these trucks though.....? It's bloody weird I think I shall christen my truck Christine. The volatges WITHOUT it running were: 12.5V at battery terminals 12.5V at starter solenoid 12.3V with the lights on Votages with it RUNNING: 13.5V at battery terminals 13.6V at starter solenoid 13.1V with lights on |
Re: Starting issue when hot.....?
My truck started playing 'I don't want to crank sometimes' for no apparent reason once upon a time.
Checked battery, batt. cable connections, checked to make sure it was charging and all of that. It wound up being the wires on the starter end. The small wire, did not have a lock washer on it, the nut backed off... sometime it was loose enough to not make contact, then sometimes it was. A lock washer solved this problem. Check all the wires and cables to and from the starter... also, as Sharps mentioned, check out the ignition switch as well. You could have some strange short in a wire under the dash or something. old trucks are fun! -W |
