Carburetor choice
What carburetor is the best choice. I have a Chevy 350 with maybe a mild cam in my 56 chevy. Choices are Edelbrock 600 or a Holley 600. Ive never ran a Holley. Please help thanks guys.

unless you know how to tune a Holley, go with Edlebrock. I run Edelbrocks on all my engines because they have been a proven performer for me. I had 3 Holleys on the shelf in the shop for a decade now and I finally got rid of them

In my experience a holley has been easy to repair and difficult to tune. And eddy easy to tune and difficult to repair. They are both good carbs just very different.

Is there anything wrong with going with a reman carburetor. Pep boys is offering 25% off any item over a $100 bucks. Brand new edelbrock carb or Holley for $269.00 after taxes. Which one would you get

I've run reman Q-jets 3 times over the years and had no problems. I've never run a reman Edelbrock but after talking to this guy over the phone I'm defenetly going to order one from him.

I just looked up the one im getting which is the Edelbrock 1406 its $239.00 on national carb. So I figure I might as well spend the extra $30 bucks anf buy a new one.

Is that his reman price?
Check with where you're going with about the guarantee. Most places like AZ and PB only have an "Out the door" Guarantee |

Yea I clicked on the link you gave and clicked on edelbrock 1406 new was $339.00 reman was $239.00. But with that special going on through pep boys until the end of the month you cant beat $269.00 for a brand new one.

The hard question, IMO, is "have the throttle shafts been replaced and/or rebushed on the base plate?" Most rebuilders don't do that and most of them leak air around the driver side throttle shaft because that's where the throttle cable and return spring make them wear the most. The few that are returned to the manufacturer as defects because they didn't solve a problem that wasn't a carburetor problem in the first place can be refreshed and possibly bought at a decent price.....but they are few. Buyer beware.

I'm real happy with the Edelbrock #1405 600cfm carb on my 400 Pontiac. And National has them rebuilt for $189. Such a deal!

If they do re-do the base plates, I don't see how they can sell them that cheap and make any money. I do a few older carbs like Holley 94's for people who want the genuine article and can pay. By the time I do all the disassembly, set up, machine and reassemble(throttle blades can be a bear) it runs into lots of time for me and machine. It's to the point where a company is making oversize throttle shafts for the old carbs like Holley 94's, 2GC's and maybe even WCFB's that cuts down on the machine and labor time but it's still an expensive proposition....and carb repair is a dying art.

The rebuilt Q jet from them for my 71 GMC runs 279.99 plus a 40.00 core if you don't have a core to trade in. I had been a hard core Holley guy for a lot of years simply because I seem to be able to make them work the way I want them to but went with a 1406 on my 71 when I wore out the last Holley I had to the point it wasn't going to work with a new kit. I adjusted the idle speed and mixture on the 1406 and never touched it in three years of daily driving of 60 miles a day. |

From my past experience, The Holley will needs trimming up as the seasons turn and can be fined tuned to your specific application. The Edelbrocks, like Mr.48 stated, are a set it and forget carb.
