Valve/Pushrod Adjustment
 

i'm new to adjusting the valves and pushrods on my straight 6, anyone can go into detail on how to adjust or where i could find something like that?

I haven't. I'm thinking about having somebody come and do the adjusting for me. Do engine shops do house calls now days?

just like any other. spin the push rod between your fingers and tighten the rocker nut until you feel it just start to grab. then do one full turn (some people only do half). just have to look fro the right order to do it, google can help with that. you can do it running but it may make a mess

Since you are new to adjusting valves I would recommend the messy way. On V8's I prefer to watch the lifter while I adjust it. I don't know if that's possible on a six and would be too hard to explain here. I can't do the twist method because I can still twist them when they are too tight for me. So........warm up the engine, take off the valve cover. Start it up and loosen each rocker nut until it clacks and tighten it until it stops clacking and add another 1/4 turn. Put the valve cover back on and wash the engine bay.

The straight 6 is a little different in that you will also need to remove the side push rod covers to observe the lifters. Otherwise it's the same as described.

Get an assistant. Remove the spark plugs so you can stick a pencil down the hole to confirm the piston is all the way up. Then have them bump the starter so you can observe the lifters moving up & down. When piston is up and both lifters are down, congratulations. Your lifters are riding the base circle of the cam during the compression stroke. Loosen the rocker nut, then slowly tighten it while spinning the push rod. Once resistance is felt tighten 1/4 to 1/2 turn more. Then move on the the next cylinder until you have done all six. And don't forget to re-install the valve & push rod covers.
