1967 327 oil pan and dip stick questions?
 

I have a 327 original to my 67 GMC truck as I was told. the numbers check out but when I got the motor It was completely disassembled. so 1st question. Do I have a truck oil pan here or a car? 2nd question. Then I got 2 dip sticks with the cluttered box of parts. when both are put in the block they have different "full" spots by 1/2". Don't want to be short on oil. anyone have any idea which one I need for a truck oil pan. I am guessing the difference is because of different oil pans GM used in different vehicles?

My unmolested '68 with a 327 has a dipstick that is 18 3/4" long from the bottom of the cap to the end of the stick and the tube is 6" long from where it seats in the block to the top.

In the interest of trying to help and offering a measurement standard, here is the 67 Chevrolet replacement dipstick for a V8 C10-30. There are a great many sticks over the years all with differnt measurements. So if you take measurements be sure to check both the high and low as they differ apparently.

hmm. here's some more pic's. my first two pics belong together and 2nd two as well. any chance when they added the large journal that they made a big change in dipstick size. My truck is 2wd if that matters for the oil pan.

the long one with the mounting tab on the tube is 23" to full and 23 7/8" to add 1 qt so it should be the correct one. closest to the book. I figured it was but was unsure. but is my pan the correct one for 67 327 2wd? Can someone confirm this for me? what is with all the changes in dip sticks? all cause of different oil pan configuration? shouldn't it be standard that all v8's be to the same level?

Good data point Leon. It looks like there was a length reduction between 67 and 68 (from the tube top to fill levels).

Since oil pans are service parts with broad application I hesitate to toss this out, but in 79 edition parts catalog they used one part number 359939 for 1/2-1 ton small blocks (283-350) from 58-72. This is without a notation to change any existing oil level gauge (dip stick) or tubes.

I went out and double checked mine to see what it is from where the dip stick seats on the tube to the fill marks and it is the same as the measurements in this post....

Um... How about waiting til you have assembled the engine, add 5 qts of oil, install one of the dip sticks , then the other and compare the readings?

because if I have the wrong oil pan and I dont have the proper dip stick for my oil pan then I am having to take the pan off after its all assembled. My build requires correct parts for the year and I only like to do things once even though that rarely happens.

I have a slightly ot question. Where does the dipstick enter the block? A po changed the pan in my truck and the dipstick goes straight into the pan.

It goes into the block on my 327 on the rear driver side of the block. Not sure about the newer blocks though. I think big blocks enter in the pan.

Me engine isnt here with me now but its somewhere right by cylinder 5 and 7

In my experience with gen 1 sbc engines i have only run across three types of pans:

1. Rear sump, No dipstick provision in pan; pre 1980 dipstick is installed into engine vlock on driver side. Pan rail has "kickout" provision for this.

2. Rear sump Post 1980 dipstick is installed directly into pan on passenger side

3. Front sump pan for 1963-67 chevy II

All of these pans are easily distinguished from each other.

My concern is this. My engine came in pieces and who knows what the po has left me with. Here are some pic's of ricks 327. It has a different pan than mine. Would 283 327 use different pans? I just dont want to have to change pans after assembly and oil in it so I am trying to make sure I have the best info I can get before I get started.

That's a 6 quart truck pan takes a total of 6 qts with filter change
