Re: [PROJECT] "Hot Rod" 1931 model a Bonneville/ Rolling bones style
Great work on the frame and cool project! Nice work on the x member too. I'm currently boxing my frame and making a tubular x member on my 40 Ford now.

Re: [PROJECT] "Hot Rod" 1931 model a Bonneville/ Rolling bones style
Went to a model A frame building class a number of years ago.
Was surprised at how complex they are. I suppose I had model T on the brain? Looking good! |
Re: [PROJECT] "Hot Rod" 1931 model a Bonneville/ Rolling bones style
This is awesome and sucks at the same time... (really want to see your truck completed!)
You're very talented. I'm a great parts cleaner and installer. My "making" skills are very lacking. I'll be following this one as well! |

The wire wheels would be '35, the '36 had the large "volkswagon" style bolt pattern wheels. Frame is looking good. LockDoc |

Re: [PROJECT] "Hot Rod" 1931 model a Bonneville/ Rolling bones style
Well I have finally got some more progress done. Last weekend I got the center section of the frame tied together and the frame off the table. I mocked up the axles just to see what it will look like. Also split the wishbones and then I had to order some parts so that was it tell this weekend. Yesterday I got the old spring perches out and new flat top one installed, mounted up the posie spring and drilled the wishbones for the sleeve for the new perch mounts. Mocked everything up to find out the shackles were to short. So today I made longer ones and got the sleeves welded in and chassis setting on its own weight.
Here's the initial mock up pictures http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1806.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1807.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1810.jpg Bolted the motor and trans in place for weight and to set caster. Here's the front end setting on its own weight. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1813.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1815.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1814.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1812.jpg Tomorrow I hope to get the wishbones cut down and the threaded bung welded in and the frame mounts drilled and the tapered mount also welded in place. I have to ream the taper a little deeper. Thanks for looking Justin |

Re: [PROJECT] "Hot Rod" 1931 model a Bonneville/ Rolling bones style
basically Ya, its modeled after the rolling bones style. The grille will hang down in front of it a little.

Re: [PROJECT] "Hot Rod" 1931 model a Bonneville/ Rolling bones style
Well I got the wishbones mounted today. Now to figure out the rear...
Here's the front end done for now, Still have to do a friction shock setup. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1818.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1819.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1820.jpg Justin |

Re: [PROJECT] "Hot Rod" 1931 model a Bonneville/ Rolling bones style
Well in order to get the rear setup at the right height I had to set the body on the frame. Well I had to cut and rebuild the sub frame in order for it the set on the frame right. I also got the body squared and bolted to the frame and made a custom rear body mount. A reattached the shortened rear frame horns so I can run a spreader bar and a push bar. Made a simple smooth firewall and started setting up the rear suspension.
Anyways enough talking and on to the pictures. Also got a longer front spring and fixed the shackle angles http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1868.jpg Body on after sub rails removed http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1828.jpg New sub rails http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1849.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1845.jpg Body mounts http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1839.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1840.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1854.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1859.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1858.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1860.jpg Reattached rear horns http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1855.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1856.jpg Firewall http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1852.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1853.jpg And the rear suspension started http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1866.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1867.jpg Justin |
Re: [PROJECT] "Hot Rod" 1931 model a Bonneville/ Rolling bones style
Well here's an update, better late then never...
I got the rear suspension all tack up except for the gussets between the hairpins, there speed holed but I haven't cut them to size yet. Built a pan hard bar and axle bracket. Then I decided it was time to chop it. I started with 5" chop but ended a 5 3/4" and I love it. Got the rear and side windows lined up just have to get the front pie cut and lined up its about 1/2" total off. anyways here are the pictures. http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1872.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1874.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1877.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1879.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1881.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1886.jpg Got the rear tires setting right were I want them... http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1878.jpg Initial 5" chop marked out http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1888.jpg No turning back now http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1889.jpg mandatory top on the ground picture http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1890.jpg And 5 3/4" chop http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1894.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1895.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1896.jpg So as I suspected there was/ is a lot of bondo on the car so after the tops welded up the body will come of and Im going to stripe it of it. Here's the rear section lined up, need two slices to line it nicely http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1897.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1898.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1899.jpg http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...e/DSCF1900.jpg Im taking this weekend off for a car show, so I'll be back on this the following weekend. Hope you all like Justin |
