sound deadener/heat shield: best bang for your buck, how many square feet?
 

Before I redo my interior I figured I'd lay some sound deadening mats in my 79 C10. What is a good brand that's actually affordable? Things like dynamat and lizard skin are a little pricey in my opinion. I was leaning towards Eastwood or summit racing brand. also, how many square feet do I need to do my cab? The truck will have about as aggressive of an exhaust as you'd want in a truck you drive every day, and it will have a quality sound system by the time it's all said and done.

Dynamat isn't a sound deadener. It will reduce the resonance but wont do as much to decrease the volume. What you want is a small amount of dynamat (think like 20% on the large flat panels) followed by closed cell foam then mass loaded vinyl. If you are skipping on any of it skip the dynamat.

Well the dynamat also helps significantly reduce heat so I was planning on covering my whole floor and firewall to help reduce cab heat in the summer. But buying dynamat means you're paying for a brand name. I was just curious what a good off brand was and how many square feet I need to buy. I will probly try the closed cell foam and vinyl as well. Where do you get that?

I have seen fatmat and hushmat for decent prices. You want butyl based and not asphalt based though.

Closed cell foam you can get on ebay/amazon/etc. The vinyl is heavy so you want to find something with cheap shipping. I would check out the automotive audio forums to see where the best deals are.

Sorry cant give you the amount you will need though. Havent done it on a C10 yet.

Their stuff seems really sticky (won't come off in AZ summers), good price, etc...

i used 100 sq ft of fatmat rattletrap, closed c. foam, & mlv when i did my crew.
thats everywhere except the roof. 50 sq ft should do a reg. cab

I used FATMAT bulk pack, I ordered the 100sf, I did my truck then my brother-in-law did an S-10 and there was a lot left over.

lowes PEEL AND SEAL.... Cheaper than dynamat.... And does the same thing

I think that's what I used too on my '82. I found mine in the air conditioning supply isle at Lowe's. Stuff is used to seal air conditioners and piping. It's almost the same as dynamat but a lot cheaper.

Just don't use asphalt based ones. Make sure its butyl rubber based.

I used Al's Liner H-N-R. It is a heat and noise reducer. It comes in a one gallon bucket for about $50 on Amazon, a little bit more at Advance auto. I rolled two coats on the floor, firewall and behind the seat and I only used about 20% of the bucket. It can be brushed or sprayed on also.

It does reduce the heat coming up through the floor and firewall. I can't speak about the sound reduction yet as I still have several open ports in the firewall and floor.

That looks great, you did a clean job! Since the article in Classic Trucks I did, I used Eastwood Thermo-Coustic for an article in Street Rodder in my '27 roadster and its amazing what a difference it made. You wouldn't think doing an open car would be an improvement.

Somewhere on Custom Classic Trucks website there's an article archived using Dynamat on my '79 Squarebody.

"Bang" for your buck is something I've been wanting to know for a while now.

I have emailed a lot of the sound deadening sales people, and none of these companies are ever willing to do any testing. Like decibel tests. They are likely afraid to find out who's actually the best. A lot of it is down to the mil thickness of the aluminum though. A lot of these solutions I see on here, really aren't going to be very effective due to the very thin aluminum backing. Roofing supplies are going to have a very thin aluminum compared to those designed specifically to hamper sound. They're just not made for that purpose.

Then you need a layer of foam, then you need a layer of vinyl. So unfortunately there really isn't a cheap way out on this one.

I used Lowes Peel and Seal for sound and another Lowes product for heat and sound insulation.

The Peel and Seal is basically just for resonance and little bit of a insulation, the other product is 2 layers of aluminum with bubble wrap in the middle, should be great at heat and sound insulation. Total cost about $50

I bought 100 square feet of Fatmat Mega Mat. It's a true rubber butyl product and I should have enough leftover to do my 70 GTO as well. At $240 this was the best deal I could find. After I finish my GTO I will probably pull the seat and carpet and put in some closed cell foam and the mass loaded vinyl. That stuff is expensive!!!

I've been doing Car Audio systems for the better part of 30 years and have deadened and sound proofed several of the ones that had bigger systems.

I spend the time and money to do this this for a number of reasons.

1. Reduce resonate or panel vibration. I hate to hear a car drive by where it rattles to the beat, sounding like its going to fall apart.

2. Road Noise. I also hate trying to listen to a good SQ song like Hotel California or a good jazz song that has a lot of mids and highs, to show off that part of the system, but they appear to be washed out do to the road noise.

3. I like when I close a door, hood, trunk like or whatever, for it to have a solid Thump to it, not a thin almost a ringing sound from the thin metal vibrating...

With the 82 I got a few weeks ago, when I strip the interior, I think I'm going to use at least two different products.

1. A spray in, to coat the inside of the doors, fenders, bed bottom, under side of the cab floor, fire wall, etc..

2. Then a deadener sheet that you apply like a Dynamat product, but probably a brand called SecondSkin...

I want this thing deadend and quite except for the Stereo and a bit of the exhaust note and Sounds from the bag valves maybe...

Whatever I mount the compressors to will get deadeded for sure.
