Quadrajet tuning
Are there any videos out there explaining the 'Fine tuning' aspects of a Quadrajet? I've seen a lot of videos on rebuilding, but I can't seam to find anything that goes beyond that. Like how to adjust the power piston for the primary metering rods or how to know if the primary or secondary rods need to be leaner or richer. How to select the right jets etc.
I read posts here (and other forums) about how great Q-Jets are "If they're tuned right", and I agree, but nothing about how to do the actual tuning. Thanks. |
Re: Quadrajet tuning
Not many guys use them to race, no serious racers use them actually, but anyway, try reaching Edelbrock carb tuning, they are a quad platform, might have some luck on their website.

Re: Quadrajet tuning
www.cliffshighperformance.com. He IS the quadrajet answer man, period. You will need to initially send an email, he is a year behind on carb repairs. He has a VERY good book, that WILL help you, get the book. He will need your carb number.
Any carb needs to be tailored to the individual vehicle. He will need to know specifics about your vehicle, use, etc. I'm wondering about edelbrock's ability to help w/ a Q-Jet, they made some for a while, that ended about 12 years ago. Guys that race NHRA, IHRA stock and super stock class cars, race them. Some super stockers run 8 second e.t.'s w/ them |

Re: Quadrajet tuning
No 'carters' eh!!
Hope you don't have a carter quadrajet. Have you seen this link from Lars about tuning your quad. http://www.digitalcorvettes.com/foru...ad.php?t=88376 |
Re: Quadrajet tuning
Look to NHRA "stock"and "super stock" tuners, their are 9 second SS and low 10 second stockers running Q-jets. For the 12s or slower, they are pretty easy to tune. Maybe try and find a NHRA stocker where you live, they may show you the basic, and read (I think ) Doug Roe book on Q-Jets, old school.
Hope this helps, Les Note: my Q-jet runs 10s and 1:44 60', 3900lbs, D/SA |
Re: Quadrajet tuning
Les,
Cliff Ruggles book on Quadrajets is easier to follow than Dougs. Cliff has any parts needed, and can be helpful, but needs to be contacted via internet, he's a busy guy!!! (Post 3) Doug Roe still alive??? |
Re: Quadrajet tuning
Thank you ALL for all the good info. However, the project is on hold for a while now. Until I can get a transmission anyway. lol
I'll start again on the carb when it's back up and running. |
Re: Quadrajet tuning
68 gold,
Shows how old I am, and how long ago I started playing with Q-jets. Think first one was on 1968 Camaro with 350 HP 396' got it as senior in high school. Ordered it as light as possible, only had PB. Was a big drag racer early on. Les |

Re: Quadrajet tuning
Les,
I have one of Doug's books, also. He meanders around too much. The same info is there, just not as easy to access. I am a Pontiac enthusiast also, as Cliff is. Got to meet him years ago. His Q-Jets are better than fuel injection. With his book and parts it can be a DIY deal, not difficult, and he WILL help you if needed, just have to be patient, via emails. IF he answered phone calls, he's never get anything done...Cliff has parts/kits that are ethanol resistant, can't buy Q-Jet stuff at a parts store that is... |
