69 C10 6 Cylinder Engne Codes Help

1 Attachment(s)
Hey,
Got a 69 C10 with a straight 6 cylinder engine and a 3 speed transmission. The engine pad has the following numbers (located right behind the distributor). The top number is: (46F) beneath this is: (2086). Can anyone tell me what these codes mean. Also, is there a way to determine if the engine and transmission are original equipment.

Thanks for your feedback in advance

I'm attaching a pgoto

Oops! wrong spot, follow the distributor shaft down to where it meets the block. There is a machined pad there, and the stamped engine Id should be stamped there. Behind the distributor, toward the firewall. Not toward the block. Example of engine Id..... V1102THA or V1102HA ...Your looking for something similar to this, A letter, then 4 numbers, then 2 or 3 letters.

Thanks Bruceman68, I think I found the numbers. Located by the dip stick. Can't seem to photo all the numbers very good, but I am attaching photos. It hard to get clear photos but the numbers seem to be: CON25H69..., did I get the right location. Thanks in advance

Those are all cast numbers. You are looking for a machined boss with stamped numbers, as mentioned by bruce1968.

Thanks, don't see an embossed plate or stamp (I guess like the one used for the VIN in the door jamb)... but may be covered by the grime on the engine. I'll keep looking. Thanks

tuskiso, The stamped numbers are very close to the base of the distributor. I put a arrow on your pic.
You did find the casting number 3921968 which is for 1967 to 1979 250cid, or 67-70 230cid
Con 2 is conveyor 2 and GM 65 is general motors mold number 65. (Nothing useful their.)
Sorry to send you back again, but you'll get it this time. No problem. Just stay close to the base of the distributor. You should see the pad. It shows in the pic. Right where the arrow tip/point is.

The pad that has the numbers is a machined surface. Same surface that the distributor sets on.
And you did find the date code. August 1969.

This is a 292, so the distributor it's self is in a different spot, but right behind the dist, see the flat spot? Just behind the motor mount? That's where those stamped numbers will be.

Thanks all, I think I finally got it. Still difficult to get clear still shots, but pulled my camcorder and was able to read the numbers a little better. Attaching photos (kinda fuzzy) but the numbers appear to be: FO 8081 does this seem like a correct number format.

Thanks for the info. and assistance.
Questions:
Since it has a 3 speed transmission now, I guess it would not be original for this truck ?
Is there a way I can tell if the engine is original for this truck ?
I can't get to the transmission easily to locate id numbers, but just in case, where would I find them?

Re: 69 C10 6 Cylinder Engne Codes Help

Any chance you have a protect o plate for your truck? It's a metal plate attached to your owners manual, last page.
Does your SPID (glove box option sticker) list a optional transmission? If not then the trans was the 3sp.

Attaching copy of my glove box sticker. Don't have manual. Just acquired vehicle last week. Very few docs. Also, I don't see a transmission option, so hopefully that suggest that the 3 speed might be original. By the way, I appreciate your time and assistance. I acquired this vehicle as a donor vehicle to restore an existing 69 C10, however, after receiving it, it appears to be in much better shape than my existing C10. If it turns out to have the original power train. I will probably keep it in tact and do an owner restore back its original look (except for the converted floor shifter). Thanks again for all of you assistance. Please review the sticker and let me know how this might help me toward my end goal.

Nice truck! Glad you found the stamped numbers.

You might look for the build sheet under the seat, up in the springs. It will be a yellowed, folded up paper that is as fragile as an ancient papyrus. There would be a wealth of information on it.

Re: 69 C10 6 Cylinder Engne Codes Help

With no optional trans on the SPID, that means it came with the standard trans which was a 3 ott, just what you have. looks to me like you got the original engine and trans. Your numbers suggest that it is. That's a nice truck, Was it military? It's been repainted right? Was it green originally. The interior was. There's no paint code on the spid.
There should be numbers on your trans but they won't help without a PoP. The number will be a M or N for Muncie followed by 4 numbers which is the month and day, and the last digit, if there is one, will be D or N for day or night shift. Nothing that really helps. Nice Truck!

Re: 69 C10 6 Cylinder Engne Codes Help

Thanks again everybody...
Answers:
1. Don't know if it was a military or other Agency Gov't vehicle....
2. Original paint appears to be Gov't Green. (I use to work for US Dept of Agriculture and a few other agencies that all used the same color vehicles: White with Military Green). The glove box door has the Gov't green on it as well a spot or two under the hood.

I'm encouraged that I might have found a jewel that needs some work for it to shine again. The clutch is slipping very badly. Got some guestimates to get this corrected very soon. Then we'll see what's next.

Just reviewing, but have a few more questions:
(1) where will I find the numbers on the transmission ..?
(2) what is a "PoP" ?

Thanks again

Ooppss.. forgot one, what is "ott"

Re: 69 C10 6 Cylinder Engne Codes Help

OTT = On The Tree, 3 on the tree, the shifter for your 3 speed is on the steering column.
POP = Protect O Plate, it's a small metal data plate(about the size of a business card) that is usually attached to the owners manual, last page. It has the vin #, engine#, trans# etc.. But without it you can't match the trans or engine numbers to the vin.
Your trans should be stamped on the machined surface just below the side cover, drivers side. But it really could be anywhere on a machined surface. They got stamped in lots of places. Even GM found it tough to keep track.
