Mufflers....

I plan on building my own exhaust for Henry. The local shop wants waay too much to do it.

Can anybody recommend a good sounding muffler? Nice rumble but not too loud or obnoxious on the highway.

On my Ls powered S10 I have the welded Turbo Summit mufflers and I get a lot of compliments on the sound. I was running out of money as I got deeper into my project and thought I would save a $1 but now I'm glad I did it.

Re: Mufflers....

Last build I used Thrush turbo muffler and really liked it and it was cheap. This time around I'm using an OEM muffler off a 2012 Silverado...also cheap and hopefully quiet. Building your own exhaust isn't too tough, and it's nice to have complete control over where and how the pipes are run. Get some U-bends and some straight lengths and have at it. I have pics in my build thread of mine.

Stay away from Flowmaster, the drone will drive you crazy on the highway.

Used the polished stainless Summit brand Magnaflow clone on the quiet side of my system. Don't have to pay for the polish but I had the entire system ceramic coated after I cleaned up my welds and it matches the theme pretty well. I've had positive comments on the tone.

Re: Mufflers....

I should be able to build my system with only a couple bends and only a couple welds.

What is a good source for prebent pipes, clamps and hangers?

I have glasspacks (cherrybomb) exits behind the rear wheels
Summit has them and also an exhaust builders kit

Check with http://www.hellsgatehotrods.com/ on the bends. Really great people in Idaho who do nice work. I'd even think about measuring out and drawing out detailed patterns of exactly what you want and having him bend up the pieces and send them that way.

If you exit the exhaust in front of the rear wheels you want good somewhat quiet mufflers or a good supply of ear plugs. I ran side pipes on the 48 for several years and had home made exhaust exit in front of the tires after that for a while and it gets pretty mind numbing when you do a lot of long miles. Great for those little rips to the store or a few miles up the road but tiresome out on the road for a couple of hundred miles or worse yet a couple of thousand miles.

I haven't started mine up yet, but I'm using long Porter mufflers. I've always loved the sound of Porters.

Biggest x pipe or h pipe you can fab together and a pair of magnaflow mufflers and a pair a side branch resonators. You will love the slight rumble and zero drone at highway speeds.

Call me old school, but you can't beat the sound of flowmasters. Nice cruise tone with awesome full throttle rip.

Check out this place. http://www.mandrel-bends.com/catalog/

I bought a box of mandrel bent tubes from them and built my own exhaust.

Raspy exhaust is not fun after the first week. Just my opinion.

During my younger days Flow, asters was my mufflers of choice. As I have grown older I decided that I do want to have a conversation with the passenger as well as hear the radio so I put turbos on and I love the low deep bass sound. Outside these mufflers sound even better.

Here is what I used this time. Before I had the same in 16" length with exhaust dumping right behind the cab, drove me crazy at low rpm and could not think at speed. Did set off car alarms in parking garages however at the right idle. These are 20" long x 11" wide with 2.5" in and outlets. Not your fathers Buick but not quiet either, wife said they were loud from 50' away when I first fired it up.

Re: Mufflers....

MY truck had the Flow Masters right under the cab. I moved the new mufflers (Turbos) back closer to the rear axle and will run the tail pipes behind the rear tires. This will make for a sweet sound. Very soothing. A good sound that allows you to talk and hear.

I put the new dynomax vt on our panel they're drone free. We started out with flow masters it was obnoxious as hell. I have super 44s on my truck but its a toy runs on 110 so it doesn't get many miles.

I wish there was a way to upload a video I took of these mufflers with the truck running so that you could hear the sound but even if it was possible the file would be larger than the allowable limits. If I only had a website.

Use photobucket, it will up load from you computer (I took mine with my phone then downloaded to my computer) real click and play friendly. Once you have the video there open it, copy the header bar location and paste it into your post here, then the site turns it into a clickable link.
